MISSISSIPPI GRIND--One of the greatest movies ever made about gambling and gamblers!

I just watched this movie and was blown away. I hope you have a chance to check out this special movie about the experiences of gambling and gamblers. ENJOY...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ooca5idaNSk

================================================== ======

Here is a review from http://www.sundance.org/projects/mississippi-grind

Gerry is a talented poker player, but his gambling habit is getting the best of him. One day, he meets a charismatic young traveler named Curtis. Deeming Curtis his lucky charm, Gerry convinces him that they should hit the road together. As they gamble their way down South toward a legendary high-stakes poker game in New Orleans, the trip’s highs and lows unveil the duo’s true character and motivation, and an undeniable bond forms between them.

Writers/directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck return to the Sundance Film Festival (Half Nelson, Sugar) with an intoxicating story of compulsive gamblers that flawlessly captures the seedy world of small-time losers and dreamers. The film’s atmosphere of frenzied hope and paranoia at the various racetracks, bars, and casinos is suffused with an evocative soundtrack and enlivened by two pitch-perfect performances. Ryan Reynolds shines as the confident, jocular Curtis. But the film’s true revelation is Ben Mendelsohn, who, as Gerry, is finally given a leading role in an American film and crushes it. Mississippi Grind instantly joins the classic canon of films about gambling. —T.G.

I watched Mississippi Grind a few months back when it was initially released. Thought it was kind of slow but good. Gave it a 7/10 on IMDB. As far as one of the greatest gambling movies goes, I have to disagree. Owning Mahowny and Rounders are the two best IMO.

Thanks for the tip on Mississippi Grind which i just finished viewing. It was a good road trip/buddy movie but it was difficult to like either of the degenerate leads. I actually enjoyed the soundtrack more than the screenplay. Lots of good blues.

Gonna check out ManU918's suggestion of Owning Mahowny next.

I agree with Thask on The Hustler. If any of you younger guys haven't seen this classic, do so immediately.

If you like compulsive gambler type movies, I recommend

The Runner ->1999 Cortney Cox, John Goodman
Bad Lieutenant ->1992 Harvey Keitel

21 was also a decent gambling flick, from 2008. I think it was talked about here before, so most folks have likely seen it..

I saw this in the theater and I enjoyed it.

This topic is not new and I have posted before but my all time favorite gambling movie is California Split with George Segal and Elliot Gould. Owning Mahowny is also good.

I must recommend Things Change starring Don Ameche and Joe Mantegna from 1988. Not gambling so much as a mob movie. A dark comedy thoroughly entertaining and like nothing you have seen before. I'd take the effort to seek it out.

Same for House of Games also starring Joe Mantegna. That one is more gambling/con movie.

I just watched Mississippi Grind on my ON Demand last week. Pretty good. Agree with someone saying a little slow. Owning Mahowny is freaking awesome. Completely concur with Man U. Phillip Seymour Hoffman= Outstanding.

I agree on California split for pure gambling and like casino in the mob/gambling genre.

sometimes i tell people that i played the important role of carmine in casino.
