We know what he tested positive for. We have no idea why he was doped with it.

You can read between the lines.

After the disappointing effort in the Preakness, Baffert took him out of serious training. That was most likely to correct the problem. He was given a 1 month vacation. Baffert worked him once in June, but then took him out of serious training again for around 6 weeks. So there was clearly a problem. Then he started started working again regularly and looked good. The problem was solved.

He then returned to his Derby level form in the Share Belief unaided.
If that's the reason, that would justify an extremely harsh punishment, even banishment from the sport. Imagine risking a horse's welfare just because he was too much of a coward to back off and miss the Derby

The trainer's first job is the horse's welfare.

They probably know 90% of the time 7 days is fine, or 10. They gave it a shot and lost is my guess. But Baffert is a sore loser.
That’s been my conclusion all along. “Let’s give it a whirl” oops….

I can't. My position is I don't care. In other sports, they don't listen to the cheaters, they just say, "positive test, you're suspended".

If horse racing is ever going to get out of the mess it is in on doping, it has to simply enforce its rules and stop crediting excuses from trainers.

agree, just wondering why they are not doing in, in light of this event almost 6 months ago. There have been so many positives since this event, for a lot more serious drugs, yet slaps on the wrist?

How come?

He IS suspended in KY. NYRA is going through the required due process to suspend him. The points ban for the Derby an Oaks is effectively suspending part of his operation in the rest of the country.

What's taking long is the results of the urine test and the DQ.

Here's a nice comparison. Look how the sport treats jockeys with buzzers. 10 years! (And to be clear, I think that's perfectly fine.) But remember, 10 years for a jockey is A LOT worse than 10 years for a trainer- you can train into your 90's if you live that long. Jockeys have a shorter shelf life.

You can just see who has the power in this industry.

The root cause of this is that the entire industry is a house of cards propped up by getting the horses to routinely run for owners that truly can’t afford it as a hobby. I can pull up 2 dozen race cards coast to coast today that are full of horses that would be on a truck to Mexico if they missed 3 races, owners that would be out of the industry if their horses had to lay up for injury recovery, trainers that would be unemployed without the day rate on injured horses, tracks that would be closed without injured horses running, breeders that would close up shop, and state gaming boards that would cease to exist

That’s why penalties aren’t enforced

He's suspended at Churchill. Not "in KY".

I've noticed Belmont and Saratoga have quite a few "Invitational" races (i.e. Belmont Oaks Invitational). I know these are stakes races but what would stop or deter a track from making all of their races "invitational" races and then not invite certain high percentage trainers to run in these races?

Bring back handicap races and assign all the Baffert horses 150 pounds. LOL

Thanks for the clarification, but for him, that's pretty much the same thing.

It's not, for a pretty big reason. Regulators have reciprocity rules. If KHRC, instead of Churchill, suspended him for 2 years, he'd basically be out of training for 2 years.

You are bringing up a different issue.

I said he was suspended in KY.

You clarified that he's only suspended by CD and not in KY. (thanks again)

He almost never runs in KY unless it's at CD or it's a KEE Breeder's Cup card. So basically, he's not going to be starting any horses in KY.

You've made it clear you want him out of the sport. I've made it clear I'd be happy with a harsh suspension and DQ and think 2 years by CD and NYRA will damage him severely all by itself for an infraction that usually just gets a slap because it's a therapeutic.
