I prefer it because it gives more horses a chance to win.
Funny thing about Nfld passing lane is that the stretch is so short that the sweeper with momentum will get the jump on the pocket horse as he waits to clear.

I do not have any stats to support this, but how can you say the lane gives more horses a chance to win? It keeps horses content to sit in and in turn creates less movement throughout the race?
Compare winning fav % at similar sized tracks with lane (Pocono, Chester, Meadows, Dover, etc.) vs those without (Pompano, Miami Valley, etc.)

I posted a comment but I guess it has to be approved.
The passing lane sucks. I've been playing Miami Valley, which I believe has the best 5/8's track in the country....longer stretch, no passing lane, good payoffs, and the favorites are winning at 32%. The outside flow is much better there than most harness tracks. The only negative is that posts 7, 8, 9 are not winning as much as they should, perhaps they should get a slanted starting gate, or have an untimed run up to give those horses a better chance at leaving. This is common when there's a long stretch, it's harder to leave. But, still, overall the racing is good and not having a passing helps.
Harness racing always screws it up when it tries improvements: steel sulkies, terrible...passing lane, terrible...artificial insemination, stupid and almost killed the breed until Alan Leavit finally got them to cut down on breedings...lasix, terrible....

Hoosier added a passing lane last year. They didn't need it, but it didn't seem to hurt the racing. Although I still don't think they should use it.
The worst passing lane is Yonkers. With the lack of movement there, they should not have a passing lane.

The tracks without passing lanes give an advantage to handicappers who are at the track to watch races live or have the time to watch replays,
