Where NFL players come from.

I heard this on "Mike and Mike" this morning. They said that 80% of NFL players came from 10 cities and those cities were in the top 25 crime cities. They also said that 80% of the NFL players came from 49 counties. I do not where they get their numbers. This may explain a lot of what is happening now.

You'd think those cities would wind up looking like the enchanted land of Oz after all these millionaires that constitute the vast majority of millionaires in the league "give back" to their communities.

College football is basically low-wage/high-risk labor when all is said and done.

All the big schools should be giving players 4 additional years(+food/housing/books) following their playing career.

Or they can make them go to classes for college students while they are there.

these guys are "stud athletes" from low-income neighborhoods.

Half of them are majoring in phys ed (and not because they are the next Hubie Brown).

Yes, that's what I meant. If they can't seem to find time to enjoy the free $40,000 annual gift of education while it is in their hands, I'm not sure other kids and their student loans need to chip in twice hoping they get past the wrapping paper this time.

I hear you JHS.

I have unorthodox ideas anyway.

The football coach was upset when he got a phone call from one of the math professors informing him that his star quarterback was not eligible to play that week because he failed his mid term.

"We need him!" plead the coach, this is homecoming weekend, and if we win, we have a good shot at a bowl game appearance. He HAS to play!"

"I'll tell you what," said the math prof. "I will give him a one question verbal exam on the sidelines Saturday just before kick off, and he gets the question right, he can play."

The coach agreed, and come Saturday, the professor shows up and ask the one question.

"What is 6 x 3?"
"18!" replied the boy.

The coach hollered "Give him another chance! Give him another chance!"

Pretty good joke, Tom!

Wonder why John was on his high horse here? Normally, he's such an easy goin' guy!

Pretty straightforward. I'm all for a guy taking advantage of his natural talent and a good work ethic to parlay athletic ability into academic opportunity and maybe even a professional career. But what happens now is largely a sad joke at the expense of all students including the players.

To say that collegiate sports are high risk/low pay when you get TWO opportunities to elevate your status in life that you would perhaps if not likely never, ever have - a good degree and a lucrative career - the payoff seems great for the investment and the risk non-existent. To then be an apologist for their inability to recognize this fact - when these guys probably should more than anyone - and feel obligated to get a do-over on the backs of those that gave them the first amazing opportunity seems utterly and completely counterproductive to me. I like Robert's premise, but the mechanism is wrong. People need to recognize that second and third and fourth chances of that magnitude rarely exist in the real world so it's time to be responsible.

I remember sitting next to some football players for a final once (Pac 10 school) and one of the guys said to the QB "Cody where you been all semester?" And Cody replied "hey man, you know me, first day, mid term, final. those are the three days I show up at."

I agree with JHS that there is a lack of personal responsibility on behalf of the players.

I also feel that the top coaches and athletic directors have a responsibility to do their due diligence in fostering that kind of atmosphere.

The kid is 6'2 260lbs and can run a 4-6. He's the prototypical pass-rusher, but he's got a 9th grade education, and has no father, and his cousins are already in jail...
At the top, Coach makes millions, the stadium sells out 100,000 tickets, the school has a cable-TV contract.

Try to get through to these knuckleheads that these 2-4 years will be over fast.
Try to at least get them on track to leave the place with the equivalent of learning a trade or whatever.
Most will not go on to make the NFL.

Somebody should for sure but that was why I mentioned that with so many guys making coin from those areas - surely these are the role models with the "cred" to get through to the kids following that path. At that age they probably won't take a lot of advice in general, especially not life advice from someone that views them as pieces in a chess game. But guys just like them but a few years older? Maybe. I don't know enough to paint with as broad a brush as I am about who does and doesn't do what, but it seems like a lot of good could come from that kind of stat if the neighborhood alumni act like men and do their part to help someone like them reach their position, including those that flamed out in football but parlayed the free education into a first-class ticket to a better life all on his own.

Football is a violent sport. Why would we find it shocking that violent people would make its best players? The NFL should bypass college and simply recruit out of the prison system. Save time and money.
