Great thread

That call deserved mention in a thread of it's own.
Couldn't have been easy, but was executed perfectly.

We may have seen the last of racing at Hollywood Park,
but I doubt very much that we have heard Vic's last call.

Awesome call of finale

I loved the call especially they way Vic was able to weave in the backside and paint the picture of the former champions, including Zenyatta. Hopefully you are not out of work long. Great job Vic!!

Jay Hovdey was not a fan

Announcer Vic Stauffer, who to that point had refrained from sloppy sentimentality and presented the card with class, lapsed into a baffling recitation of great horses in Hollywood history midway through the race, even as the earnest dozen runners going for a $50,000 starter-allowance pot were out there putting their lives on the line.

I was there to pay my last respects to Holllywood Park and got a lump in my throat as he named all the greats during the call. Sad to see Hollywood Park go - I hate change.

I feel the same way. Hovdey is entitled to his opinion, but if he thinks it would have been more appropriate to simply run through the field again on the run down the backstretch, and treat the race like just another race, then that seems to contradict the whole point Jay was trying to make in his article. I didn't understand the criticism, even if he softened it a bit by saying that Vic presented most of the card with class.

I would say that the crowd here disagrees with Mr. Hovdey's opinion.

How dare Hovdey write about horse racing while

there are homeless children in the world.

I had the audacity to criticize Vic once, never again. That final call was amazing and Vic has been elevated to legendary status in my eyes.
