Something to build on.

Didn't raise any Derby goosebumps, but that was a decent effort and more of workmanlike type of test than I anticipated.

the 3 horse field and this race wasn't that stellar. but this horse has a ton of ability and hasn't done to much wrong so far. the horse will probably get a little bit of a freshening and go down to Florida and get the acid test there.

Maximus, Maximus the Merciful . . .

Splts:

25.12 (25.55) 50.67 (23.93) 1:14.60 (23.88) 1:38.88 (12.86) 1:51.34

Interesting how he got faster as the race went longer; looks as if those workouts meant what they said. Nice ride by Frankie Pennington here - gotta keep the horse on his right lead deep stretch. And interesting how the Remsen winners have gotten slower and slower over time.

Fun to watch and as Robert Fisher noted, something to build on. I'll be watchin out for more 2 yo Into Mischief types goin long and lookin' forward to seein' what Maximus has for em' next year.

i just thought a little more about this horse. instead of going down to Florida, this horse might be better off running in New York, like the Bayshore and go from there. i watched his maiden race and the horse impressed me bigtime.

That was the one chink in the armor that was exposed today...swapping back to his left lead inside the sixteenth pole and shortening stride considerably in the closing stages.

He handled a determined challenge from the unheralded Tax and shrugged him off, but will he be able to do the same at this distance (and longer) against a presumably stronger rival(s) down the road?

At any rate, a performance reminiscent of Bluegrass Cat in the 2005 Remsen who did OK for himself the following spring.
