Three guys, all from PA: John, Ron, & Bryan. Not surprisingly, one of them is a student of Dave, so this goes full circle back to the OP. My original mentor moved to Florida many years ago, and he now mostly plays the dogs.

Mr. Formula was in some fascinating arguments on this board many, many years ago. His argument was that you can't win at racing. If I remember correctly, he also never bets, just studies and makes paper wagers. Yet here he is, still around, all these years later. Not only that, but he's helping out.

Brings a tear to the ol' eye.

Wasn't Mr. Formula the guy who was working on a winning baccarat system here a couple years ago? It's all starting to come back to me now.

In our days it does not make much sense to consider antiquated metrics like for example Quirin speed figures or Sartin pace “numbers”.

When it comes to figure creation, the public domain knowledge is mature enough to provide adequate methodologies of how to proceed. What is really absent both in the literature and in the related software, is the necessary data mining approach to extract meaningful conclusions both about the relative quality of a specific metric and more important how and if it can be used to beat the betting game.

Considering the Big Data Science booming and the availability of many open source libraries that can be used for any kind of data mining I find it amusing when people get involved in endless debates about the validity of things like Beyer speed figures or the under-performance of a specific metric as these type of questions can be answered with a high degree of certainty by the application of relatively simple ML techniques.

Didn't this website start ,late in the last century, as a companion to a handicapping program ? Maybe that's why PA stopped selling it.

I think you guys are missing the point.

The question - and real purpose of the thread - was to address the question, "Who do you call for advice on improving your handicapping process?"

That fact that Formula does or does not currently bet does not take anything away from his skill set, which includes what I was exactly looking for: an analytical yet statistically-based mind.

In my experience, the guys who do better at the window are the ones who work to improve. Ironically, one does not do that by just handicapping lots of races.

That would be like expecting a farmer to increase his yield by planting more fields the way he does now.

Of course, another product of my experience is that most players do not (or refuse) collaborate.

Sure, a player may ask, "Who do you like in this race?" but they do not usually sit down and create or join a Handicapping MasterMind Group with the idea of mutual improvement.

Anyone but my mother. She gives me a lecture on gambling and the same story about a friend of a friend who lost a lot of money on the horses once. Tho if I find myself betting recklessly I suppose she'd be the one to nag me out of it.

I don't call anyone. I just read and post here and read the horse racing blogs and watch videos. And I spend time watching replays of races I've bet or paper played or of horses racing in upcoming races.

Us yearlings can learn a lot 'round these pastures.
