Confederate Flag Racing Silks
http://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-raci...int?source=rss
Wow. So they name a horse "Mute Rudulph" to echo the feelings some have to TVG's Ken Rudulph. Then they use confederate flag racing silks as a substitute and win.
I don't have a problem with someone wanting to fly or use the confederate flag and I also find Ken Rudulph to be incredibly annoying. But this is really, really, bad.

This is just an all-around hard to believe story, and yet another blow to the image of racing in California.
Thank goodness this didn't happen at a NYRA track though...there would probably be about 10 threads and 150 replies by now...

I'll help out by adding a reply. These two guys should get their tails kicked, and good.

And if the silks had said "Polytrack rules" there'd be 30 threads with 500 replies.
This is a pathetic story though. While I understand freedom of expression, it's not like these guys even cared about the Confederate flag or had ever used it before. They just did this to piss people off, and it shows what a clown show racing is in CA that this could even be allowed to take place.

What a freakish episode. Adding to the outlandishness you have collusion with the track colors man who "received financial consideration and conspired to aid and abet" GoofCentral.
If there's any consolation to Rudulph, the announcer heralded Mute Randolf throughout.

That sounded like Cal Expo harness race caller Scott Erlich. I hope he mispronounced the horse's name on purpose. Ken Rudulph, while irritating and annoying, doesn't deserve to be shamed like that.

What was the logic behind all this? What did the owner have to gain?

No doubt.I'm from Cincinnati and I've been slapped with the "East Coast" label. So I know how far the fervor can go.

What motivates people to jeopardize their livelyhood with stunts like this is a mystery.
Look, according to Southerners, the COnfederate battle flag is a symbol of Southern Heritage. I know this because living where I do, I have to endure stories like this on a monthly basis, Unfortunately the flag had been abused by a lot of people with some pretty twisted ideas. The Flag has been ruled out of bounds by the perpetually politically correct(PPC). And as long as the PPC are running the show, it is not ok to do things that offend. This Flag offends enough people to give it poor status. The owners of this horse should have known this is not the place to push the envelope. They will get what they deserve.
One thing. The State has to be very careful with First Amendment issues here.

Whether the southern cross offends any given person or not, is really not the question here. They substituted the owners' standard colors with the Confederate battle flag for the same reason they gave the horse it's name: to harass and humiliate Ken Rudulph.
And there is no pleading ignorance here; they intentionally subverted the clerk of scales, and bribed the color man in order to pull this prank.
They should be kicked out of California.

take out the horses name
take out the bribe they paid
and I would be behind them wanting to use the silks on a first amendment stance.
But these two were just asking for it

This may have nothing to do with this story, but i remember it clear as day.
there was a owner and i believe it is in So. Cal who has the confederate flag as his/her silks. The horse with those silks won the race, and when they came back to Ken and his co host, he said
"good performance from that horse, but i must say, they really should get rid of those silks. there is no excuse for those silks to be on the track"
that isn't verbatim but that was the gist of it, he was definately pissed about someone wearing those colors. makes me think they use those silks cause they know it pisses him off.

Can you imagine if this had happened in, say, the NFL? Good gravy...someone woulda been fined a million+, and probably stabbed. And I'd be all, "Yup, punk-ass asked to get stabbed."
Someone please send Butkus out Cali-ways to clean house. I'm confident he'd get the job done.
