California Chrome at 4
Assuming he races at 4. Which I assume will happen as the connections stated only a "poor" performance would send him to the breeding shed.
What race would you bring him back in? Hes been racing against the best for the past 7-8 months. I think I'd try to find a softer spot to bring him back.

I would give me a couple of months off and then ship him to Gulfstream to start his 4yo campaign in a relatively easy spot. Next would to ship him to Keenland for the spring meet to prepare him for the next BC.. A SPA visit would be a must for next summer and possibly followed by passing from Elmont later in the fall...

Why would a California horse ship to Gulfstream? There are plenty of good races for him at home.

CC surprised me a bit yesterday with a good effort. I thought I heard one of the commentators mention that the Kentucky Derby winner hadn't hit the board in the BC Classic since Unbridled won the race in 1990. If true, than CC deserves an extra pat on the back.
The problem with racing him as a four-year old is that it's unlikely he'll maintain top form for his 2 YO, 3 YO seasons and then next year as well. Any sub-par performance impacts his initial stud fees, and I don't believe his blood is blue enough to command that high of fee to begin with. On the other hand, if he does put in several good efforts as a 4 YO, he'll be able to get a higher stud fee for his consistency, longevity and soundness.
If he's training well, I'd bring him back in one of the preps for the SA 'Cap, and see how it goes. History is not on his side, but maybe he's an exception to the rule. With his owners, it's anybody's guess what will happen. Their decision may hinge on whether or not the colt receives any honors, as that affects stud fees as well.

He just came back to the races more time off? I would keep him right in his own backyard. He ran so good yesterday and received his top beyer losing by a neck.

As long as he's in the clear in races, he should run decently next year.
The races where he draws the rail, I'd count on him to miss the board.

I would like to see Bayern, Chrome, and Shared belief all aim for the Strub series at Santa Anita. That would make for an exciting winter meet..

Sure, he does not really need a GP race, but I think a race like the Sunshine Millions is a perfect spot for a top level CA bred to start his year...
I have to admit, that after the race he ran in the BCC, I was finally convinced that CC, indeed is a top level race horse that might have a bright future and given his humble breeding, that does not immediately make it a top sire, he possibly can run for two or more years... I still think, that his connections need to select aggressive spots to place their horse, instead of been overly protective, trying to fit him in soft spots, consisting of South Cal couch potatoes...

I say start out in California, have at least one or two trips east in the summer/fall possibly for the Woodward or Jockey Club Gold Cup, and then take on the Breeders' Cup Classic at Keeneland.

If they do anything other than retire him they are pissing away money. He had golden trip in Classic, no excuses, and could only manage 3rd. His best is past, IMHO. Let him schtup some mares, he's earned it.
