Why ? It seems Maryland racing was making a big comeback. I saw a race this week where 8K claimers were running for 20K ?

They've been pushing the Preakness Stakes to Laurel for something like 10yrs now.
Pimlico is, to invent a word, unexpandable...they basically want to be able to "pimp the place out" for the big race and Pimlico is apparently umpimpable.
(damn, that's hard to say)

Move the race to Laurel, then rename the track Pimplico.

Pimlico should be closed permanently and the Preakness moved to Laurel Race Course.

Why would it need to be expanded? If the crowds are as sparse as most race tracks. One big race a year isn't reason enough. Or were you talking about barns? I was recently looking at aerial shots of closed racetracks from the 50's to 60's. and the parking lots were absolutely packed to the gills.

The city of Baltimore will fight tooth and nail to keep the Preakness, even if it means running 1 or 2 days a year only at Pimlico.

Not running so much at Pimlico is helping in Maryland racing making a comeback. Laurel is superior in almost every way.

i had (imo) a good plan to do this and call the place TRIPLE CROWN CASINO AT LAUREL PARK. the racino was to include a hotel with derby, belmont, and (track overlooking) preakness towers.
someone messed this up though.....

Here's one of Bowie, and if you look at this link, there's one of Atlantic City and I think Havre de Grace c. 1950. I always found it interesting that Havre de Grace racetrack was owned initially by Arnold Rothstein, the famous gangster, who was shown a few times on Boardwalk Empire.

This link has all the closed racetracks.

Then those geniuses should do something to clean up the surrounding neighborhood.
It's real bad outside the gates.

On Preakness Day you will never, ever have any problems because of the neighborhood. If you want to talk about the facility, sure, it needs work. But nobody is getting mugged or robbed or shot or anything around Pimlico on the big day.
