Odd one in Rams/Seahawk contest

Goff threw a pass late in the game to Reynolds (they were in a hurray up mode). Pass was complete, but no defensive player touched the receiver AND the whistle had not blown.

Reynolds placed the ball on the field, then ran back to his huddle, never giving the ball to the ref for placement.

The Seahawks, thinking it was a fumble, then jumped on it.

Refs came over and explained that the player "gave himself up." Ball was retained by the Rams.

What the heck was this all about???

same as taking a knee, the receiver could've kept running since he wasn't touched but the deliberate act of putting the ball on the ground ended the play.

Okay but the runners is not allowed to SPOT the ball, only the ref can do that.
