PitchCom did nothing to affect game times last season...

...but yes, the pitch clock is shortening games by roughly a half hour. Not "changing" the game, but restoring it to mid-1980's levels.

I think there will be stat changes when it comes to pitchers. I think some of these guys will be rattled by it.

Change me.

Two months ago I saw a Twitter exchange between two people in the racing industry.

They were both bemoaning jockey helmets that match the horses saddle cloth color. For example, red for 1, a blue helmet for the 3, yellow for the 4 and so on. So that gamblers watching on TV could better follow thier wagers on horse's.

Traditionally helmet colors match the owner silks. It upset them. To much change.

You’re exactly spot on with the pitch clock . It’s one thing if you’re in the stadium , watching the game at home was becoming ridiculous. They were losing viewers. It had been coming for years . Guys stepping out to adjust gloves, the pitcher stepping off and walking around , adjusting his hat, . It wasn’t good for the game or TV product . Reality is……. That’s their bread and butter . So, the central agency (MLB) stepped in and changed the rules . If this crap had been nipped in the bud years ago . It wouldn’t have happened. Same thing happened with the hissy fit over HISA . If horse racing would have self governed itself , the Federal Govt wouldn’t be all over them . Plus, the fact that the cheating and cover ups scare casual fans away and are not good for business. The fact is you’re selling sports……. People don’t need them . They won’t starve or freeze without it. Piss them off ….. bye bye. That simple . So your dumb ass better cater to MODERN SOCIETY! Gee, why are Horse Racing and Baseball losing ground ? .

I don’t really agree with the shift rule either. Teach people how to bunt and go the other way . Like we had to learn . And that would have never been a problem.

Ken Griffey Jr. will be the 4th highest paid player on the Cincinnati Reds payroll this season, and he's been retired for 14yrs.

That's all I need to know about the chances of my favorite team this year, and the chances of me watching any baseball.

If MLB really wanted to speed the game up they would eliminate challenge replays.

I’m done watching baseball. Not interested in speeding up the game. I don’t care how long it takes. Which is why I’m done.

The new rules, although mostly to increase pace of play, are there primarily to make the product more watchable.
People don't tune in to watch small ball bunting and banjo hitting. They dig the long ball. And they don't want to wait 10 minutes for it while the pitcher and hitter fidget. The teams will still find ways to use gamesmanship to outfox opponents, but not at the expense of the product selling itself.
If you recall, baseball almost killed itself twice before. Once with the Black Sox scandal. And Babe Ruth's prolific power saved baseball then. And then again with the players' strike. And, again, the steroid era saved it with all the steroid induced home run power.
None of this was done to make devoted baseball fans placated. They weren't going anywhere. It was for the casual fans who cannot even name 5 players on their home team. They buy just as much beer and auto insurance as the devoted fans. Other sports have benefited from these sorts of changes and there's no reason baseball should not benefit.

Or cut back on commercials.

Oh, wait.
That would cost revenue.

So, you're willing to forgive all the umpiring errors that replay has corrected?
It takes a little longer to get things right.
