Yep, that was it. Coupled entries and apply the same treatment to all the trainers in this regard.

If there were a college class on race fixing - a Race Fixing 101.
Viewing this Belmont Stakes would be a course requirement.
How many different ways Baffert can do it and get away with it?
This would be an essay question on the Final to RF101.

It doesn’t get more transparent than that...tough for the fan to guess the “intentions” of the horsemen and the jockeys, And their various “plans” executed, not executed, calling “audibles”, etc...uncoupled entry “teams” ...and why wouldn’t the crews be tactical like this...? It has been part of racing since, forever...like Tom hints at...
The rational, you know, is, we do it cause we all know the competition does it also, and we got to stay ahead of the competition, right...?

Repole is saying he was working as a team..
no one on the Baffert side has said that, its conjecture.
Its all irrelevant, Justify set a fast pace as it was, they still didn't beat him, guess people wanted to see 22 and 45 again.

Maybe they could even add this class (Race Fixing 101) to the curriculum at the Arizona college as part of the horse racing industry program!
It would be required for all who want to get into this business, so they know what they're going to be getting into ahead of time.

The "optics" on all the papers this morning were about a great horse winning a TC!
Think of the race as roller derby - Baffert came prepared to stop the jammers.

This should be the post of the year. They should've had the waah-mbulances on Long Island yesterday.

The Water, Hay, and Oats gang want to control the elite races. When $,$$$,$$$ are involved. Pletcher has run 4, 5, 6, horses in the derby and I have never seen anything like this Belmont. Their Idea of restoring integrity is to take it away from every one else and abuse it in another way. Just another Black Eye for Racing.

This made me chuckle.
Racing never gives the bettors what they want, until it does, and then it's never done right.

ESPN Jumps in.
"He looked like a bodyguard making sure nobody got close to Justify."
Velazquez, who was riding Vino Rosso, added, "Why would you send a horse that breaks bad and take everybody out, then come back in? That's his job, to protect the other horse, and it worked for them. You have to give it to them."
Even Restoring Hope's owner was not happy with the way his horse was ridden. "I have no earthly idea what Florent was thinking or what his race strategy was," West told the New York Post in an email. "Had I known better, the first eighth of a mile I would have thought it was a quarter-horse race, not the mile-and-a-half Belmont. Maybe the horse was completely out of control and Florent had no choice. I will never know."

2018 G1 Belmont - I don't think Restoring Hope was in the race to actually impede other runners. But I do believe he was in the race to shadow Justify and force others to take a wider path early if they wanted to pressure the front runner. It was clear and laughably obvious that Geroux was told under no circumstances can he actually pressure Justify. It is the reason he went 7 wide on the first turn as he was a bit anxious. Going wide guaranteed he wouldn't go "with" Justify and quicken the pace. By that time, he had already done his job.
I have only seen this suspect race riding three times where a trainer has two runners in the race and it appears one is in the race to block for the other. In all 3 cases, including last Saturday, Baffert was at the center.
No idea what was really going on but it is more than likely that Restoring Hope was not in the race as a serious runner but for other purposes. I mean does anyone really think Baffert would enter a legitimate contender to deny him the Triple Crown? Even if the owner persisted in running an actual contender all Baffert would have to say is the horse looks "off" and shouldn't run.
Bad for racing.

Don't forget the horse that was parking Shared Belief while Fed Biz rode the rail in the Awesome Again.

Even if this was a defensive screen it seems less "bad optics" for racing than somebody sacrificing their own horse's chances by engaging in a speed duel to wear out the favorite and deny him the Triple Crown.

Repole is great for the game in many ways, but he's off base here.
Justify has high quality sprint speed. Noble Indy couldn't get to him even if he went all out. He's not fast enough. Also, if he was supposed to be on the lead as a semi rabbit, why did they take the blinkers off?
Second, from what I understand Winstar owns a piece of both Noble Indy and Justify. So what is Winstar thinking right now given Repole seems to be saying he wanted to sacrifice Noble Indy to beat their star. That would be the first time in history someone ran a rabbit against themselves (for the Triple Crown no less).
The entire thing is nonsense. Both Noble Indy and Restoring Hope took positions approximately equal to their natural speed and post positions. All it's doing it's tarnishing a Triple Crown winner and NY racing.
