Portland Meadows joins Hollywoood Park
Shuttered racetrack Portland Meadows was demolished this week, making way for a new freight facility, according to KATU News in Portland, Ore.
The track, which opened in September 1946, continued operation last year, offering purses at the time of less than $53,000 per day. It continued to offer simulcasting and poker until December.
According to the Portland Meadows media guide, it was the first Thoroughbred track to offer night racing. It also launched the careers of several leading racing industry participants, including Gary Stevens during the early portion of his Hall of Fame riding career.
