I read a constitutional scholars analysis of the Second Amendment some years ago. The gist of it was:
"A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."
Even though the subordinate clause "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State," is first, it is still dependent on "the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."
The words "the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." could be a stand alone sentence on its own. Whereas the Militia clause can't.
Words mattered to people like James Madison and Thomas Jefferson.
