No Horse Racing Wagering at Indana Casino and Sports Book?
So I'm at a resort in Indiana and they have a small but decent casiono floating on the river. I make tracks to the Fanduel Sports Book with multiple screens, a few of them showing horse racing.
I do my handicapping, walk up to the teller and say "For the X race at X track, i'd like $20 to win on the X horse" and the guy says;
"Sorry, we don't allow animal wagering here. No dogs, no horses."
? OK. New one for me. But I've never been to a Casino in Indiana before. Unless that's a "Fanduel" sports book thing?

I don’t have the answer to the why here except that I know the sports wagering machines are not set up to take parimutel wagers. For instance if you visit Mohegan Sun Casino the sports book is operated by Fanduel for sports wagers but the horse racing is at separate machines having nothing to do with Fanduel.

Unless they were commingling with the track pools, they could not pay track odds. A big hit at the casino on a slow day could hurt them if they had to pay track odds out of a small casino pool.

How difficult could that be? Didn't small tracks start comingling about 35 years ago?

Nevada did it for years, putting maximum pay-offs on the bets.

But Indiana Casino is not a small track, it is a casino. They don't have any horse race betting coming in on races at their place. It sounds like they have figured out that it isn't worth the costs to offer horse betting to a limited audience.

Or possibly in Indiana you need an OTB license to take off-track bets.

"Animal wagering." What a chilling term in all of its implications. That one goes for our jugular with a dull serrated blade.

Yeah, that’s probably just a worker though. It’s all about money. It just says management doesn’t think it’s worth it. I don’t know the state and how legal it is. But it just shows the economic impact horse racing doesn’t have. Sport betting legally is in its infancy. It seems like they’ve already decided where their bread will get buttered. Like I said I don’t know the legal situation there though.

I'm sure. But PETA should pay him for that mantra.

It might be wise to investigate just why the casino is "on the river".
Your answer may lie within.
(not likely because they're running out of space in Indiana, but maybe?)

I think you're right.
As casino gambling rolled out back in the 80s and 90s, a number of states required it be on a boat, and in Illinois, the Peoria riverboat had to leave the dock, which is why it cost $8 to get aboard. I'm not sure how long that lasted, but a few years later when I went down there it was free to get on and permanently floating and docked. Always weird rules when floating.
But "animal wagering" is relatively chilly.
Five years ago on Belmont Day, I met some friends up in Vancouver, BC,who had a long layover coming back from an Alaskan cruise. We hopped a train from the airport to downtown, and settled into a bar for some food and to watch the 11th race from Belmont (when Tapwrit won).
Some of the TVs had baseball and other sports on, but we didn't see any racing coverage. My buddy, with his thick Jersey accent, asked the server, "Say, where's the horse racing on TV? We have a vested interest in the Belmont Stakes."
She replied, "We don't show horse racing. It's violent."
I piped up and said, "But you do show hockey games, right?"
She had a perplexed look for a couple of seconds, then just walked away. A lesson learned in woke cognitive dissonance.

That's the way the Hoosier casinos evolved, too.
The one in Lawrenceburg has a Barstool sports book that's relatively new. I can guess that if the original poster was at Rising Sun or Vevay or Jeffersonville, they probably have new sports books with the FanDuel branding. But they were never intended to be OTB's as well. That's just the way it is, for now.
