I explained it a little better, think it is understood now. They're investigating.
Amazingly in about a month Belterra has run two races at the wrong distance and now ran one at the right distance but timed it for the wrong one.

I get the race, without run up, around 1:44.5. Seems they did not time the first 70 yrds. I am assuming that the little white box I see just past the starter is supposed to be the beam. From the finish pole to finish pole I get very close to the 1:41.01 being reported.

Got it. You can also tell because there is no mile fraction given for the race as there are for other 1m 70y races at BTP.

Nothing "casual" about Saratoga at all. Trainers point to the meet in hopes of winning the training title. Jockeys move there to win the riding title. A lot of owners take pride in winning a race or two there. Highly competitive racing meet.

I wasn't talking about owners, trainers, or jocks. I'm talking about the way the meeting is run. It is a casual summer meeting. The distances are not always correct because the starting gate placement is not always the same.

That is an old book. Saratoga has changed. There is nothing casual about placing the gate these days. Yesterday was just a blatant error that the stewards should have caught.

America's "premier" race meet.
Did any of the experts on the TV show notice it?

Placing the gate wrong was an error, but there was nothing casual about it?
How many people are involved with gate placement? In addition to all the track personnel, if you include fans at the track and those watching at simulcast facilities it has to number in the thousands -- and no one noticed?

I guess not, until it was too late. I'm sure these guys get complacent and they probably get screwed up when the rails are moved around all the time. I'm remember the Ragozin book and he meant about the run up not being the same if memory serves. Since they hand timed from the gate that would be important to know, the exact gate placement.
It happened twice at Belterra in a short time span earlier this year.

After reading a little more it seems that they just added 6 seconds to the final time. Am I getting this right or was the final time timed from video?

I can't figure out that note to be honest. How they arrived at 6 seconds is unknown.

I'm sure they took this very seriously and used the latest scientific method to get it right.
Just kidding. I couldn't resist being an asshole.
