Yea, what about that? Back when I had a day planned on-track, I'd often focus the night before on the first two or three races, to improve my odds. Sometimes that worked, sometimes not. It often felt like a great day when I had a decent hit in the last race or two. That money usually stayed in my pocket.

I submit there's no such thing as house money. When the money's in
YOUR pocket It's your money.

I had a friend that would get ahead and say now I"m playing with tracks
Money. Then he'd proceed to lose it all when he could have been conservative and left with a profit!

It makes no sense to me to start the day off with small bets...we don't know which races our winners will be coming out of. IMO...it's best to play within our bankroll, be selective in our wagers so we can play to our strengths, and, above all...don't chase our losses when things start going wrong.

Starting off with small bets reveals a certain lack of confidence which doesn't complement the competent player, IMO.

Let us not forget there is no such thing
as a sure thing.

Losing a small first bet doesn't put you
in the hole by much. The big money comes
from the exotics so why waste big
money on a win bet? If you lose, then
you are back to trying to win enough
to break even.

Do they get upset if you rathole chips while you are playing? I know players get mad at a poker table and sometimes they even get mad if you use your chips to buy food or tip for drinks.

You are not supposed to rathole chips at the poker table.

From the YOU CAN'T MAKE THIS UP folder.

There is one crackpot author who explained
Quote:
in his book
that the way to play was to make mind bets for the first 8 races, keeping score of how much you lost.

Since you didn't actually make those bets, you are AHEAD.

So, you take a small percentage of what you would have lost had you actually bet, and set that aside.

Then you bet the rest of it in the last race.

The way he saw the end result was that you either "WON" a little or you won a lot.

IOW, the worst that could happen was that you came home only a "small winner" because you didn't lose as much as you would have.

If I had a proven method of play I would attain a program that would bet 24/7 with an adw site. Why stop if you have an edge?

if you're referring to the house - they could care less what you're doing unless you're counting cards

or unless you got lucky and had a huge win - that would be noticed

or if you're betting big they want to get your name and comp you so you come back and lose more - if they believe you're not a pro

sometimes you might encounter a nosy pit boss with an attitude getting more involved than the management expects him to be - who cares - ignore him

if you're talking about other players at the table - who cares - there is so much nonsense chatter at a BJ table - you could get a big headache trying to listen to what the ploppies are saying and responding to it - many will tell you you made a wrong play when (if you're knowledgeable) you know you made the right play

you could have some pat answers prepared

ratholing chips__? somebody comments - you say "oh, I promised my wife to give her some chips"

at a casino - doing your thing - it's best to take all of the other players and their comments with a grain of salt -

My favorites were the folks who would stop along the roadside 1/4 mile from the track to buy tip sheets out of the hatch of a rusted out Vega.

And that is one method of betting with other people's money as the original poster stated. The guy in the Vega who sold only one overpriced tip sheet had his betting money for the day. If he lost his bets, he's even. If he won money, he made money for the day. If he sold more than one he had the opportunity to have a really good day.

Trotter ratholed the 5 up his ass. He was so broke he had to drop his pants while standing in line.
