I think it was a big donut for Storm Cats until American Pharoah. Not sure if it was ever really a thing or just being “unlucky.” I guess in horse racing something is a “thing” until it’s not, like I will let a Dubai horse beat me before I give one serious consideration. With Justify and AP not sure you can really count out Storm Cat, that’s my take.

Theses are the stallions whose offspring have not produced a winner of the Kentucky Derby despite multiple attempts:
  • Tapit (0 Wins from 11 runners)
  • Curlin (0 Wins from 8 runners)
  • Giants Causeway (0 Wins from 8 runners)
  • Candy Ride (0 Wins from 7 runners)
  • Tiznow (0 Wins from 7 runners)

Interesting notes on the sires. I’d prefer a larger sample around 30 starts before making conclusions with any degree of confidence. Storm Cat had a lot of runners before Justify broke that sire line jinx. AP had it on dam sire side only. Some sites probably do have slower developing horses but any evidence I have is only anecdotal.... like Tapits excelling in Belmont.
