Win 10 or 10 Pro & Explorer

Seems no matter how old I get, I'll never stop eating my own word. Sheesh!
Swore I'd never buy another computer, however grew weary of the contsant limitations.
Bought a used Dell I7 and Windows 10 Pro.
Took me days to move data, software hardware from old computer.

My current problem is with Windows Explorer and search results. (gogle results only confused me more).
The only change that I made was to remove Windows Indexing of all files contents on C:

1) when searching for file names, I fail to get search results of partial file names.
EX: Smith doesn't show JohnSmith (or any non-eact names)?

2) Search Results are not displayed with the same 'details' as my configured display.

I have Win10 Home but I don't use Explorer as my file manager. I tried the Explorer Search function for fun and mine worked fine. That is, I got file names with partial matches. My indexing is turned off because I have SSDs. Did you change the search location to This PC? As far as I can tell, you can switch to the Details Pane, and on the right side you will get some file details. Those can be configured from View/Add Columns.

Many thanks.
Don't recall changing any search location, however my norm (multiple times each day) is to go to specific folder and search that folders sub-folder contents (8-10 subs deep) for specific files.

I've changed the columns displayed and applied to all folders on computer, unfortunately that doesn't seem to apply to search results.

No clue if I twitched, blinked or looked at the stars, but the last few searches have provided the detailed results to match folder config.

Well Don...this is a Microsoft product; strange things are known to occur. I am not sure the experts at M$ know everything about Windows. Glad it's working.

Wilderness,

Do yourself a favor and get this product.
FilesearchEX
https://goffconcepts.com/products/filesearchex/

It's $10 and provides a Windows XP-like file search.
(They may have a free version.)

While yo are at it, get this product, too.
Start10
https://www.stardock.com/products/start10/

It makes your Win10 desktop look like Windows 7.
Worth the $5.

Dave,
Goff/FileSearch a nice software, but $35 yearly.

There must be a setting in Win 10 that returns the search option of earlier Win versions, despite many attempts still unable to find a solution for partial name searches.

Wow!
I paid $10 and it has worked for a long time!
[edit] Installed in 2015.

Must have realized that they can't survive on $10 a lifetime.

Found a Win 10 solution, however it's very time consuming (requires new index with strict configuration).

Getting partial name results presently, hope it lasts.
Not sure of accuracy, will have to check my XP machine and compare results.

Win key, than type indexing.
Indexing Options
EXCLUDE SYStem folders (not sure how I accessed this).
1) Some where I changed it to index file-name/properties ONLY and not file-content
2) Exclude Folders
3) Specific Filters
4) File Types (there are hundreds that require unchecking, but reduces indexing speed dramatically).

My situation quite unique.
I've two specific sub-directories of horse items that are 8-10 more sub-folders deep. I search these by file name (not content) numerous times each day using Windows Explorer.
a) For content I use a Desktop tool that builds its own indexes (the configuration nearly as complicated as Win 10).

Win 10 (by default) and the file indexing, indexes both file-name/properties and file-content of ALL files on your machine (including all system files), which is severe overkill. In addition Win 10 correlates the results with many software's (big brother).

"will have to check my XP machine and compare results."

Win 10, after custom config.
Search one subfolder (multiple subs) for 'haughton', resulted in 335 hits/results.

Old XP and same search 981 hits/results.

Better results on partial file names than I was getting but still not satisfactory.

Guess I've still some work to do!

I reached out to Goof Solutions.

It is actually worse than you think.

Perpetual license is $100 for the 1st machine and $35 for each subsequent machine.

Also, I did pay $10 back in 2015.
Apparently, it was shareware then, with an option to donate $10.
Apparently I also donated.

This sounds like a very unusual situation. Searching finds some but not all partial matches? I wonder if the problem lies in the directory structure in that it's too deep for the search to work. Sounds crazy but anything is possible in Windows 10. I use Free Commander as my file explorer and it has its own search function so I don't have a need for the Win10 version. Unless you are wedded to Explorer here is a link to a free utility that might be helpful -- WizFile

headhawg,
Thanks.
One of the sub-directories (and following subs) contains approx, 65,000 files, while the other approx 85,000. (FWIW, Rtf, txt, jpg, tif, bmp, pdf, html, eml and perhaps a few more (I was very very careful in sifting through the file type elimination in the Win 10 configuration).

The number of files and the depth of directories could be the problem, but it is hard for me to imagine any such change/restriction would have taken place between Win XP Explorer and Win 10 Explorer.

Some software's do include a file number and depth restrictions and/or configuration to change, but again, it worked fine in XP.

I've be dependent upon locating JPG file names for retrieval/sharing with others inquires for approx., twenty years and besides being frustrated with the short coming, it's a major blow as a failure to assist others.

Many thanks.
