Albeit it would happen in waves.....given the 14 day incubation period, + another 5-14 days of illness even in the "mild" cases. And if THEY all came to work, then it would just duplicate this scenario........

.....thus this would be going on for 2 years instead of a few months.
How do businesses get by every winter? Serious question.

The flu is no walk in the park. And up to 40 million people get the flu every winter. And that's WITH the vaccine that's been around for ages.

With no herd immunity in the community, and no vaccine, and the fact that there are no medicines or antibiotics that kill viruses.........40 million would be on the "low end" of estimates with this virus, without containment. Like ridiculous low end..

I am in sympathy with your concerns, which are very real, but there really is a reason why the entire world has chosen containment over any other solution.

If you think the medical experts of the entire planet are wrong about this, and that the algorithms of their epidemiological supercomputers are in error, then yours is a minority opinion.

Serious answer: There is no other viable reasonable or workable solution other than containment, unless we develop a vaccine, attain some herd immunity, or come up with a pharmaceutical that can cure this once people get it. 40 million cases would be a complete and utter "drop in the bucket" without these things.

Well, my question was how do businesses get by every winter, since someone brought up the fact that coronavirus could grind business to a halt anyway, not unlike what is happening now with the response.

I was genuinely curious. Somehow, they manage, I guess.

This actually isn't true, but I guess it sounds good.

For instance, our beloved neighbor to the south, Mexico, has chosen a more measured approach.

Maybe because the flu is relatively weak compared to covid??

You have to really be in bad shape to die from the flu. It happens, but it's not common.

Some average fat american 60 year old with a sedentary lifestyle is not that likely to die from the flu, or to need a respiratory ventilator.

What am I missing?

Vaccine is starting testing today in Seattle. It’s fast tracked. They’ll know sooner rather than later if it works. Another vaccine is scheduled for June testing.

Nobody was talking about dying. I was just asking how businesses get by every year with the flu.

The flu is pretty debilitating, even for healthy people. You really can't work often times when you have the flu.

High fever, chills, vomiting, diarrhea...highly contagious...how do businesses do it?

COVID will wipe out business if unchecked because so many people will be sick...that is what you wrote.

I guess it doesn't matter either way, since many of those businesses won't exist after we get done with them.

Fair enough Click.....
However, do you agree that there are two sides to every story? I don't think Mike is arguing or thinking the medical experts have no clue.
But, what about the business experts who by the way aren't discussing with the medical experts and vice versa.....

Do you disagree with the business argument? There are members of this board who are directly seeing the effects on the business side. Last I saw, I think it was Ralph who said 50%+ decline almost overnight. Guess the medical experts know what's best for Ralph and his business right??

Here in New Orleans, it has now been MANDATED by the mayor and governor that ALL resturaunts can no longer have their dining rooms open!!
Movie theaters CLOSED...
Casino and Bars CLOSED!!
School (ALL) are closed for a min of a month.

and more to come......

So, lets see where this goes..... staff in restaurants laid off...... And to think, New Orleans is a destination for tourism and food......THIS CAN"T BE A GOOD THING!!
Gee, I wonder how many people work in the food and service industry in New Orleans????

Theaters, yep, you guessed it....seems like layoffs are inevitable.

Same for Casino's and Bars......

Tell me what the medical experts have to say about all of that? And thats just the tip of the ice berg!!

You see, at some point in a lot of situations, you have to weigh the outcomes against each other. Its not pretty to do such things but a necessity none the less....

Agree it's crazy so many major decisions are being made under incomplete information. However they're being made with the latest information available by people who specialize in this stuff.

There is enough info out there at this point that you come off as dumb or willfully ignorant if you're asking what distinguishes this from flu or other seasonal illnesses businesses deal with. You lack foresight or understanding of exponential growth if you're using current U.S. statistics / death rates to argue against serious preventative measures.

The irony is these measures will certainly "flatten the curve" and reduce peak burden on hospitals so we hopefully won't observe as much overflow and unnecessary death/suffering, and you will likely take that as a sign that you were right and things aren't so bad and we shouldn't have shut anything down.

You may end up being right.

But I don't think we know yet. It hasn't really HIT there yet. Not dead on from what I understand from looking at the maps. Right now they only have about 53 cases.

I'm notating the date: As of today, March 16th, Mexico has about 53 positives for Covid-19.

In a month or 2 , I will be interested to see what Mexico will look like.

(I predict semi-trailers full of rotting bodies that they have no place to bury them.)

I do hope I'm wrong.

I wasn't talking about COVID...I was talking about the flu.

And I wasn't making any comparison.

But thank you for the insult.

I know COVID-19 isn't the flu. I know it isn't the same virus. I know a lot of things, in fact. Surprising, I know.

You're right about one thing though. There will be a ton of flattening happening real soon.
