I know its only Rillito but.....

there was a crime committed in full view of the judges. actually it was the judges who committed the crime

In race 1 the gate for #7 does not open. They call for an inquiry and amazingly they said the horse didnt break.

Of course he didnt break you idiots, THE GATE DIDNT OPEN!

This happens a couple of times a year. I assume the horse had a flipping halter on. If the horse is settled the gates open normally and it releases, but if the horse is pulling back at the start it holds the horse and the stops the gate from opening.

In these cases it is the horse's fault and its a starter.

In the equipment designation for the race, the #7 did have an "f" - which I'm assuming is "flipping halter".

The chart comment: #7 KVN DISCO WAS DEEMED A STARTER BY THE STEWARDS BECAUSE THE HORSE WAS THE CAUSE OF THE GATE NOT OPENING.

Thanks IAMT - I learned something new today!

The gate did not open. Assistant starter was all over the horse. Optics were horrible. If it was not Rillito where maybe 12 people were watching there would be an uproar.

Announcer said the horse refused to break.

Look, I like Rilitto. I have won there every day of this years meet including today.. Obviously one cannot wager much as handle is so small. The decision cost me a grand total of 10 bucks so it is not a big deal. Actually less since my horizontals ended with a loss in race 2.

Iamt I appreciate the explanation and I am not going to dispute it. My opinion though it was more laziness than anything.

The gate can't open when the horse is pulling back. You can see the rope tied to the release to the right when the horse finally moves forward.

The purpose of the inquiry is to see if there was something else, other than the halter, that caused it. There is nothing in this that suggests there was a mechanical issue with the gates, it is all on the horse and the gear he needs.

Okay, learned much today and I take back my original post. BUT had the announcer been instructed to handle this event the way the Los Alamitos announcer did in this video, it would have helped.

Like a lot of us here, I'm a bettor and not a horseman.

Thank you for taking the time to educate us.

I am not at Rillito. But I always mention a Flipping Halter and if there is time explain what it used when a horse loads into the gate. In NM and AZ they can be used on Thoroughbred horses as well.
