Jose Ortiz switches agents

Quote:
Eclipse Award-winning jockey Jose Ortiz said Aug. 2 he is parting ways with agent Jimmy Riccio and has enlisted Steve Rushing, who also represents his brother, three-time Eclipse Award winner Irad Ortiz Jr.

The move will become effective once the third condition book at Saratoga starts with the Aug. 17 card.

in this case, they were already out in full force.

these days, jock agents run around in their bathrobes all morning and have riders all over the country....

the last thing Steve would allow is monkey business. he is a straight shooter his whole life and i doubt he's about to change now.

I eluded to this happening with Dylan Davis at some point in the very near future. Dylan is a quality rider who doesn’t get nearly enough mounts as he should. Only when the big boys are out of town. He was gunning for a 6th spot in jockey standings but like I forecasted it will be 8-10 hole. He has already taken a few days off from Toga to ride some races elsewhere. That along with low mounts so far I’m predicting a 9th place standing. I’m also predicting a new agent.

In regards to Jose having the same agent...idk how that will pan out but those brothers must be awfully close to agree with it.

So, if they ride in the race, will they be coupled and listed as Ortiz, and Ortiz, ?

Were both Rushing and Riccio "single jock" agents up to this point?

Tale of Two Cities.

Jose: I've been thinking about this for a while. My business is not what it used to be.

Jimmy: I'm shocked & disappointed, I didn't see this coming.

This board's Nick Tammaro tweeted out some interesting info:

"Jose Ortiz changed agents despite having 6 Grade I wins in 2022 vs. 7 for all of 2021. He wound up 3rd in the Saratoga standings in '21 and won at a 17% clip. He is currently 4th and winning with 16% of his mounts. He has never been a first call rider for a 'top' barn. Weird."

I hope RUSHING has total confidence that both are cool with the new arrangement.

I made the BIG mistake of taking on MARTIN GARCIA when me and JOEL ROSARIO were doing all the good.

I checked with him on almost a daily basis if he was ok with the new set up.

He assured me everything was totally fine. " Don't worry about a thing"

Then one day he won a Grade 1 on a filly named CRISP for John Sadler.

Five races later Martin won the Big Cap on MISREMEMBERED for Bob Baffert.

Joel rode the favorite in the race St. Trinian's for Mike Mitchell.

A week later I was fired.

I fully admit it was a mistake on my part.

We live and learn.
