I think they’re trying to scam me. Again.
I have internet and cable through Xfinity or Comcast. They used to provide protection through Norton. A couple of months ago we got notice that Norton would no longer be providing that protection. Xfinity would be doing it in house.
Fast forward to today. I get an email from someone purporting to be from Norton, thanking me for my order and informing me that $378 has been deducted from the bank account associated with my Norton Account.
To begin with there shouldn’t be any bank account of mine associated with Norton because my protection was with Xfinity.
There was a number listed to call if I wished to cancel. Interestingly, though they said it was a toll free number, it did not appear to be such.
But I called it because I didn’t want to charged $378 for something I don’t want. First suspicious thing. There was no menu, no identification as being Norton, just a voice saying we are connecting you to the proper party.
When someone answered and I explained what I needed, the first thing he said was do you have google Chrome. When I said yes, he said I needed to open Google Chrome on my computer.
I explained it would take me several minutes to start my computer and do that. He said OK, but whatever you do don’t disconnect this call.
So, I disconnected the call.
My thoughts. I wasn’t talking to Norton at all. Someone was trying to access my computer and were doing it through Google Chrome. For what purpose I don’t know.
Thoughts? Opinions? Advice?

Most likely to install Ransomware or to install malware to allow them to collect personal information.
Definitely, don't provide them remote access to your computer.
Regards.

As of right now, no. I’m thinking the scam was to get access to the computer.

Yes, that’s kind of what I thought. Who asks for access to Google Chrome just to cancel an order. Never had that happen .

Typical phishing bullshit. According to the FTC, the Norton email has been a popular one this year:

Don't ever trust or respond to emails, texts, or phone calls purporting that something has been charged to you, and you need to respond to a number they provide. Just delete or report accordingly.

Mosty what's your phone number the DNC has been trying to get in touch with you to thank you for all your support. They just need your SSN and bank account numbers and you'll be thanked for your years of unwavering support

Excellent advice. You know I am not as dumb as Elkchester Road and Replay Randall think. Not by a long shot.

Gee! Why don’t I just send that to you and you can pass it on. Or maybe I could post it on Facebook and Twitter.

I keep getting they are delivering my xbox tomorrow from Amazon and they will deduct $499 from my bank account. Funny thing though I don't have an amazon account.
This happens periodically over the last year or so and nothing happens.
I just ignore it

I get calls at least once a week from a 936 area code and the same prefix as mine. All say they're calling on behalf of my doctor and need my personal info and medical history. I heard kids in the background on one occasion and told the caller to fk off. When I don't answer and call the number back its always no longer a working number.

All you have to do is look where the e-mail came from, look at the web address, that is the dead giveaway if it is a scam. If it was from Norton it would have ended in norton.com
If the e-mail address looks something like this: helena1128beyam@juststaysilent.com
It did not come from Norton. The above e-mail was on a junk e-mail I just got for little blue pills.
