I think it would depend on the conditions and distance.

Slew would probably outrun him in a match race or average Grade 1 race where the pace was moderate.

In a race like the Classic where Slew would be more likely to have to repulse the bid of another high quality speed horse first, Bid would probably run him down.

They should have retired Slew back when he got sick.

Hello Casino, The Bid could not set as fast a pace as Slew could.
In a real race others push the front runner and that softens them up
for others late. In a match race they only have to beat one horse.
The Bid would either have to let Slew go early (a sure loss) or
go with him. This would mean he would run faster then he normally does early
which would take his punch away late. Slew would win.

A couple of other points you made:

Slew's Belmont-June 11th...the Swaps-July 3rd...3 weeks.
The Bid's Belmont-June 9th...Delaware Alw---Aug 26th..almost 3 months.
The track record was nothing..1-41 3/5. It is held by another horse now.

As for the Affirmed question, tough call. I think the Bid was better.
But, Affirmed was a smart horse..he liked to "camp" on the lead.
He just was not flashy.

Ultimately, I would have to say Slew. He had more "raw talent".

Though I can see in many race conditions that The Bid could beat him
if Slew was forced to a fast pace. That is the problem with brilliant horses
who have huge egos and can't/won't rate off of the lead i.e. Dr Fager.

But they are both great..it sure would have been fun to see all three
of them race together..Slew, Bid & Affirmed.

I was lucky enough to see both Slew and the Bid in Ky at farms.
Great times those were.

Slew would open up around the turn and be in front by two or three lengths before the Bid could start his rally. Advantage speed horse...
