Very true. And I understand that being scolded, for a lack of a better word, by somebody that is publicly recognized, can sting a little more than if joe blow ultracapper calls you out. I understand all that. I've been called out here a number of times for statements I can't solidly support, most recently in the Chuck Berry thread. Though I stated something I know I've heard, and give credence to, I still had to step back because I can't prove something that hit somebody's nerve wrong. That's the way the game of "lookie what I know" or "aren't I the smart one" works. But it doesn't have to get vitriolic when your feelings get hurt, particularly when somebody has shown a very generous and considerate side of themselves.

If you want to be a "player", you're going to have to face the "real players" sooner or later.

While that's not exactly how I would describe my interactions with him, that's also not important.

He's a notable person in the industry and a skilled handicapper, and I sincerely hope he finds his way back to the board.

I agree with you on this post 100%, I also haven't had many pleasant interactions with him but what he brings to the forum in knowledge alone makes him a very welcome addition!

Andy has longevity at NYRA, and I'd put that in the category of an accomplishment that underscores his talent. I know from experience it's a hard job and he does it well. I know a few immediately recognizable writers/handicappers who will monitor the posts but will not participate, by choice.

About 10 years ago my youngest son was in the 8th grade, and had to do a report on a "family interest". He chose my special little interest, horse racing. One of the segments of the report was to interview somebody, outside of the family, that was knowledgeable on the subject. But I've stated many times on this board that I'm an unapologetic Andy Serling fan, and it's because of the kind of man he is. It has nothing to do with his handicapping or public persona.

Anyway, CJ can lock this one also, because I have no interest in being the initiator of another Andy Serling thread. But I did want to share this, and I hope it stays up for others to read.

Based on tweets back and forth and my face to face conversation with him at Saratoga last summer, I can tell you this, Andy Serling is a good guy. He was pleasant and willing to engage in a discussion regarding the early part of that day's card. Good back and forth. And he did this during the race program when his time is limited.

Full disclosure I don't know Andy, never met him but we have multiple friends and acquaintances.

My take on him has been simple. Andy can give it and he can take it and those people are few and far between these days. I think people simply don't know what to do with him.

Years back, I couldn't stand him. Couldn't even listen to him, but he was always there on the screen and unavoidable. Then I heard him talking about his experiences talking about seeing Dr. Fager run at Aqueduct and as Tom stated above, his passion for the game was undeniable.

It's easy to judge somebody from a few minutes on the screen here and there, but you won't always be right in your conclusion. He does have a sarcastic sense of humor as do most New Yorkers, so I can see people in other parts of the country not understanding that. He does display humility here and there. My opinion of him has changed 180 degrees before this post. Maybe one day I will get to meet him. Who knows?

I would say that Andy does not suffer fools gladly. When he sees people online act like they know it all when they clearly can't tell which of the horse is which, he shoots them down. Is he blunt about it in a way some can't handle? Yes. But it's also pretty clear if you meet him in "real life" that he's a good, helpful guy. And to me that's what's important.
