Mt Rushmore of "Cool".
Coolest people in American history. I guess whatever your definition of "cool" happens to be is pretty important. Lets take the person in their prime (some people were cool at one point, and got less cool as they got older for one reason or another, so, lets just accept them in their "prime cool years")
Top 4, not necessarily in order.
Johnny Cash
The Fonz
John Wayne
James Dean
Honorable Mention, not necessarily in order: Newman, Elvis, Clooney, Denzel, Rock Hudson, Eastwood, Bronson, Samuel L and of course, LL Cool J
*i didnt google and research this, just off the top of my head*

This list seems to be focused on celebs, so;
Steve McQueen.

Not an American, but the coolest man of all time has to be Keith Richards.

Well, it could be anyone, even someone you know personally who's not famous...but, if they're not famous, none of us will 'get it' so that's why you see people you know on my list.
McQueen is a great call for sure.
Two i need to add are: Chuck Norris and The Dos Equis guy.

They don't have to be Americans as long as they made their mark in America.

Cool Thread!
I'd also vote for McQueen. He was pretty cool. At the time when he was most popular, I think he was an Icon of "Coolness" in America.
In American Culture I'd add;
James Dean
Clint Eastwood
Paul Newman
Robert Redford
Carlos Santana
Miles Davis
Gary Cooper
Lenny Bruce
James Cagney
That's what I can think of off the bat. Probably hundreds more.

Phil Lynott of Thin Lizzy was extremely cool.
Is there a cooler song, ever, than "The Boys are Back in Town"?

If Lynott gets on the board then make room for Bootsy.

Frank Sinatra. Marlena Dietrich.
In the real world, John Glenn and Amelia Earhart.

The first word that comes to mind with Lynott is "Cool." With Bootsy it would be "Flamboyant."

As long as we are mentioning "Rat Pack" guys, definitely Dean Martin for me.
Even as a kid I thought he was cool. He even talked cool.
Also add:
Dick Clark
Johnny Carson
Mickey Mantle

You're right, I actually meant Chuck Yeager. Much cooler than Glenn.
