You know what these big overseas races do? They don't have insane nomination requirements and cover all expenses for starters.

Your statement is a totally erroneous assumption on your part. As a business model and engine for growth, Globalization has reached its' apex and has started its' decent. Depending on your present age, you will see its' collapse in the next 10-15 years.

I went to the Breeders Cup in 2008-2009 and I have to say it was an absolute pleasure. The Pro-ride was safe and fair and the racing was superb, the weather was great, the fans showed up in big numbers. Santa Anita is simply a fabulous location to host a Breeders Cup.
Having said that, I can see why NY fans are getting frustrated with missing out on the big event once again. A bit of transparency on the allocation process would be useful.
By the way, I had to laugh at this "boo-hoo, this isn't fair, why are they even trying" ...
"In a parallel universe of fairness and statesmanship, Santa Anita might not even have applied for the 2012 Cup and instead said it was obviously New York’s turn but that they’d sure like to be considered for 2013."

When will Belmont become a racino? In the past, when a race track installed slots generally the race track part of the operation goes to hell after a few years.

I honestly thought it was a great surface. Much better than what the synthetic surfaces are like now in North America (with the exception of Woodbine who have not tinkered with it just so that it would suit early speed).
Last season's dirt at Santa Anita was what I would call atrocious. Unsafe, biased to the extent that it became boring to watch, and offering little value to handicappers.

Not to worry, they change tracks there more often than their underwear.

In it's infancy at it's best. If it came to fruition this would be for an Indian tribe have no idea what the financials would be.

Becoming? They became that a few years ago.
Putting the event on synthetics, putting it on synthetics again, talked about running the event in Europe, added a bunch of ridiculous races for horses we've never heard of or care to hear of again, yanked the stakes program as a thanks to all the breeders who supported them, started paying hundreds of thousands in travel allowances and entry fees on horses who if they're well would've picked up those costs willingly, split up the actual championship races over two days, called one day "Ladies Day" when boys ran on that day and some of the best "Ladies" ran the next day, pulled the event off network tv, put the event on several different cable stations requiring that one even turn the station to another midway through Saturday's program, ran the distaff in the dark which made for two very long days, and I'm not even done yet.
"Joke" is being nice.

I like the idea of moving up the date. I have to think they don't want a replay of 2007 when Monmouth was a sea of slop. I know Belmont had a pretty sloppy BC back in the mid 90s as well. Run it in the first week of October and northern tracks become a viable option. I never bought into the idea that this one race should determine Horse of the Year or be the overriding factor in determining Eclipse awards.

Euros aren't going to be big on shipping that far to run on real dirt either.

While I agree with your main point here, that it is cronyism and very unfair to fans and New York; I wouldn't go so far that it is a typical bunch of Stakes races. Diluted? Yes. Typical Stakes races? No. This California/Santa Anita bias might end up making it so. It is still the greatest 2 days in racing. You are certainly right about the Euros observation.

Just a thought but NYRA could get together with Parx, Delaware, and Monmouth and have a super weekend card spread at those three additional tracks if they were willing. Parx might be tough to hop on the bandwagon but it would make for an exciting time.
Imagine all those tracks loaded with fans on the same day and what the handle might be.
