Sorry to read this about Randy.
Randy was the king of the Fair Grounds back in the 80's going head to head with Pat Day on many occasion. In the big stakes races Day usually got the better of him, but also got the better mounts.
Always heard he was a very hard worker and he was a top notch rider to me. Did well in New York for a season or two, maybe winning a riding title at Belmont in 87 or so?
Had a knack for riding fillies and mares, maybe the Franks owned Heatherten was his first big mare winning 4 Gr I's in 84, too bad she did not hook up with Princess Rooney that year in the first BC. Then had Sacahuista, Personal Ensign and Go For Wand later. Prayers to him and his family.

Prayed for him last night. Such unfortunate news. I sure hope for a miracle. A wonderful rider at the very pinnacle of the sport during racing's better days.

Randy rode our horse at the fg one fine and windy day at the fair grounds back in the mid 90s. Horse hadn’t won in a while but she was properly spotted and out low percentage trainer told his agent a good sob story and we were good to go. Romero up. Anyway our horse just before getting to the track, freaks when she hears a flag snapping and dumps poor randy on his rear end. Gamely gets back on and rides the hell out of her and she just misses 2 noses for all the money at 19-1. Hellva ride. Really sorry to hear about his condition.

Yes when we talk about "love for the game" I don't think many of us would pay so dearly, the price he paid, to get back to his horses and the sport.
Truly humbling when you encounter someone with so much courage and determination.

Not sure the exact weight he was trying for at the time of the accident, but I'm guessing not much was done then nor has been done since to raise the weight requirements. Makes no sense to me that even to this day jocks have to struggle to make 120 et al. So maybe they run like 00:00:20 slower if the starting weight is like 130 in a nondescript 6f OC40k/NW2x. Maybe. Who really cares???
Think there are spots were the Euros carry 132-136 at times.
