Suffolk Downs, Free DRF Card. Bet.

Last day Suffolk today. C'est la vie. DRF is giving away the card in honor of the day. I'll be playing along and posting this and other stupid shit here.

Because of the new rule that goes into effect in 2020 you should make one token bet today.. If you never bet Suffolk Downs there's certain clubs and clans you'll be excluded from.

If your senses are easily offended do not return to this thread today.

The oldest public beach in America is Revere Beach. On the south end, on a quiet day, you can almost hear the race caller.

Jockeys, trainers, grooms and hot-walkers lived in the honkytonk motels and rooming houses on that south strip. The same owner also owned a a bar called the Shipwreck.

Next Door was Ebb Tide, although named Bill Ash's for decades. In there , people got hooked on Cocaine mainly, but booze and gambling also took people out. When they went down with debts, you can imagine.

I'm estimating 1968 as my first memory of going to Suffolk Downs. I am sure that I went earlier but my earliest memory was in that time frame.

I recall that because people mainly talked about the War. Vietnam Tet Offensive.

In the 1970's I went backside every weekend and after school during the week occasionally.

My father had the pest control contract at Suffolk. I checked the rat traps, I put bait in the rat bait stations at all the barns and sprayed the cockroach juice in the backside cafeteria.

The Place to be.

Pro Athletes everywhere, Red Sox Brass, Politicians.

Now they go golfing, but back then, the professional athletes went to the track to kill time before their night games.

Red Sox and road team players and personnel were at Suffolk all the time. Everyday.

Politicians,celebrities of all kinds.

Boston is Clanish not so Racist

Boston is Clans. If you live there then you know. The 3 biggest Irish neighborhoods fight like the Hatfield & MCoys's but not at Suffolk Downs. Suffolk Downs was when the Clans mingled in peace. You could even talk to Italians and Blacks at Suffolk.

Keep to your Clan t'was modius operendi elsewhere. Mandatory

Suffolk Downs is Next to Logan Airport

For a time I lived at the Pratt Place apartments. Nothing is closer. I heard Larry Collmus through my windows everyday. True.

From Pratt, I just do a hop-skip-jump through a small marsh. Less than a 100 yards and I'm in Suffolk Downs.

Squirreled away there was the BIG E. A bar that screams "no strangers".

But over the years it got a big cult-following with airline people. Pilots, Flight Attendants had it on their radar as a True Boston Bar.

Any given night I could stop in there and find a new girlfriend. Girls open up on the road.

Oh yeah, then I'm going Sandbar and the Hells Angels Chapter , the trampers, and all the way to Roses. If it gets ugly I may end up on the Lynnway betting playing dominoes with the Hondurans and Guatemalans.

I was an absolute regular there during my college days in the late 80s early 90s. Even tried to schedule my classes so that I could go more...total degenerate.

I'm in the club.

Racetrackery

I always enjoyed entering Suffolk in non-traditional ways. Through the marsh, or some door nobody else knew is unlocked, or jumping the fence.

When I go to Saratoga, from Siro's to the entrance is all fence. Even with a ticket, I am aching to jump the fence. That's the best way to get into the racetrack in my experience.

Apple former head of the trampers is a good family friend. And all the angels from down there are up here for bike week this week. You know Bianchi's Pizza is gone from it's original location now right? They moved into Renzo's Pizzaria which is down the boulevard a ways in the vicinity of Kelly's Roast Beef.
