Suffolk Oddity Pick 4

How lucky is this? Not sure I have seen this before. Did anyone but me played the pick 4 tucked away starting in the 3rd race at Suffolk. I played a modest P4 with 4 horses kicking it off, followed by a lock single, a spread race and my best bet to close it out the in race 6.

A bomb buster knocked me out in the first leg the paying $72.40 (I thought). Thank God I did not throw out the ticket. Got my single next, a 5-1 shot next, and then got my BB in last. Nearly threw the ticket out again as I was cleaning my pockets and for some reason I looked at it and pocketed it for reasons unknown. A minute later I hear announcer saying pick 4 was paying out 3 of 4? What?

$252.00 for $2.00. I was hoping not misreading my ticket and gingerly handed it to the teller hoping I'd see something come back. Holy Cow, since I had 4 horses in the first leg I got the full $252.00.

I've been stinking it up and maybe this will change my luck. Huge crowd, good racing, festive atmosphere. I am going to miss the old place. Hoping for a miracle it does not get torn down. One more weekend and it closes for good

Ticket
Suffolk R3
.50 Pick 4
1 2 6 7 // 7 // 3 4 5 6 7 10 / 3 7

3 of 4 paid $83.00 for .50c.

I was there. It was a great crowd and great atmosphere and lots of scenery. I did not do as well as you. Lost 3 of 4 photos. Sigh... I thought the card was excellent with lots of betable races. Still looking at the 3 and wondering "how the hell"

Think I'm out for tomorrow since the queen wants to go to the beach.

Congrats; I never throw away my tickets. I had 4/5 on the pick 5@KEE and there were multiple longshots in the sequence. I went home and checked the charts to see why my losers didn't run well and noticed it paid $188 for 4/5 (pick 5 was hit) and the leg I missed I had 2 horses-so it was a bonus. I think ELP pays 4/5 on the pick 5 so Caveat Emptor

Thanks. I think limited national audience even knew Suffolk was running. Most Pick 4 players look for the early and late P4 leading off and ending The start in Race 3 threw more people off, along with an impossible winner to kick it off. So a Pick 3 starting in race 4 with a no brainer chalk followed by some logical contenders allowed a backdoor 3-4 payout. Glad I went deep in the freaky leg 1 to catch it multiple times. Best

The extinction of racing in New England has been so sad: Narragansett Park. Lincoln Downs. Green Mountain. Rockingham Park. And now, after this year, Suffolk Downs.

The reason's they are running these quickie meets at Suffolk is to not expose themselves to losing the para-mutual license to run in Mass.

Chip Tuttle is leading a group to open up Great Barrington Fair. Massachusetts always had Fair Racing at Marshfield and Great Barrington.

Now that MGM and Penn National Gaming are operating Casino's in Western Massachusetts. The Suffolk group is trying to get racing going out there.

I'm sure their long term plans are for slots. That said, the main issue now is the length of the license. Traditional pari mutuel licenses in Mass. have had short renewal lengths.

Chip and his team are lobbying for an agreement of 20+ years. That reflects what MGM and PNG got for the casino's. And it is important so that they can attract the level of investment required to reboot Great Barrington.

I think they will succeed. Some recent news can be discovered on Google.

Lincoln Downs is now Twin Rivers, and its a nice stop again.

I've got no dog in the fight and I like to play small tracks, but haven't various groups been trying for slots up there for decades now and not gotten them? There might not be much left by the time someone finally gets approval.

Penn National in Western Mass? Where?

There will only be one casino ever in Western Mass and it’s MGM Springfield. They will not have a racebook or simulcasting but I think they are working on it in conjunction with Great Barrington Mass proposed racetrack.

The new allure to retaining a pari-mutuel license (anywhere) is to use it as an "in" to sports betting.

If .50c payout is $83...then a $2 wager should pay $332...no..?

I was in Boston last week, and saw the new Wynn ( encore) is about to Top-off.
I saw it the backway, I was in Somerville, Assembly Square across the river.

The Wynn was a bruising battle. Then Steve Wynn got caught up #metoo and they changed the name to Encore. That opened the door to numerous recent challenges , including lawsuits.

The most titillating one
That Everett land was owned by "known organized crime" ( convicted). And as such they cannot financially gain from any Gambling, so they were forced to sell at depresseed price. Now, it appears a side agreement was hatched for additional $14 million after Wynn got the license. It was an Off-the-Books agreement

Good fortune aside, one thing strikes me from your post.
I like how you structure your wager.

Having 2 singles, including your best bet at the tail end, is generally a good way to go.
Moderate spread in the other two legs makes sense as well.
Situations like this on a betting menu are a green light for the player.
