Shouldn't We Simply Get Rid Of Run-Ups?

Why shouldn't one mile mean one mile - instead of, for example, one mile plus 172 feet as it does on the dirt at Santa Anita?

And this would standardize all races nationwide at the same reported distance, eliminating the ridiculous scenario involving 7 1/2-furlong turf races at Gulfstream.

One final point: If a horse breaks its leg, loses the jockey etc. during the run-up, the bettors on that horse don't get their money back, do they?

Once they leave the gate, they have started.
For some ridiculous reason, they just don't time parts of the races - for use by the general public anyway.

Quarter horses get timed right out of the gate. Why not thoroughbreds? Possibly for the short run to the turn in one mile races? If so, don't run one milers or others with short runs to the first turn.

Gulfstream served up a double dose of craziness in the 6th race on Friday: Not only did they observe a 100-foot run-up, but they used the first finish line for the 4 1/2-furlong race, shortening the stretch by 200 feet while shortening the run to the turn by 100 feet despite the run-up!

Gulfstream is the king of stupid ideas, bad run up distances, bad timing, etc. Basically everything they do is anti-horseplayer.

To the broader point, of course run-up should be done away with in 2018. It shouldn't even really be a question.

That's why they run mile 70 & mile 40.

But even those races have run-ups.

About the only races that have a run-up of 0 feet is 1 1/8-mile dirt races at Belmont, since they can't fit in any run-up.

Run up is listed at 18 feet for 9f races at Belmont. Pimlico at 6f is 5 feet, as is Gulfstream Park mile dirt races. Mahoning Valley lists 6f races as 0 feet and there is very little if any run up.

I've seen some 1 1/8-mile dirt races at Belmont with run-ups listed at 0 feet - and at 1-mile dirt races at Gulfstream it is 5 feet.

And since NYRA corrected its error at Aqueduct and returned the Inner Dirt Track to its original status of a turf course, why not bring back the 1 1/4-mile dirt chute at Belmont? Giving the 1 post a 10-length head start over the outside post in such big races as the Jockey Club Gold Cup is ridiculous (the 1 1/16-mile Inner Turf Course races at Belmont also need to go for the same reason).
