It was reported that the barns caught on-fire too. A very unfortunate year for California.

In reality, the loose horses are not trying to run from the smoke, they are trying to find away back to the barns that are burning. They equate the barn with safety. So they are trying to go back to the burning barns. Same thing happen at Woodbine. Horses that had their stall doors opened, perished in the fire. They refused to leave the barn area. They have become so accustomed to people doing everything for them, they don't recognize the dangers of the fire.

San Luis Rey Downs lost about 15 horses that were too afraid to come out of their stables. These fast-moving fires are so devastating. #LilacFire

This is just heart breaking. There is a video going around from someone on the backside showing horses running everywhere, guys running down shedrows unhooking webbings and trying to shew the horses out. It's said there are guys on roofs of the barns with water hoses trying to wet down barns and keep flames away. This is a horrific day none of them will forget. All there deserve recognition for putting up a good fight.

SANTA ANITA PARK, THE STRONACH GROUP AND THE DEL MAR THOROUGHBRED CLUB OFFICIAL GOFUNDME PAGE
After the tragic Lilac Fire at San Luis Rey Downs Training Center in Bonsall, CA on December 7, 2017 overwhelmed the local horse community, the many affected horses and humans are in dire need of support. The industry has come together at an unprecedented rate during this heartbreaking situation and we turn to the community once again to request help where it is urgently needed. So many have offered their immediate assistance and so many more are unable to be here but want to contribute in any way that they can. This GoFundMe page was set up for exactly that reason. Near or far, people will be able to offer the smallest of amounts knowing that 100% will go towards serving all the Lilac Fire efforts. Feed, bedding, blankets and many other supplies are still needed for the Equine evacuees and donations towards medical bills, housing, and other essential amenities are necessary to help the hurting California horse racing community. Santa Anita Park, The Stronach Group, and the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club thank you for your support of the Thoroughbreds and the Horsemen overwrought by this tragedy.

Those photos are hard to look at.
See PA's thread for GoFundMe - they need help there.

I wonder what it would take to have, say, breakage for the next 30 race days diverted to help those gravely affected by the fire at SLR?

With laws regarding where it goes, I think it'd be difficult. From what I can tell, probably $750k has been raised in cash, and probably another $200k has come in the form of supplies. I think the people in the industry are stepping up and will see to it that all is covered. The biggest bill will be for Martine Belloq and I hear they are on top of that. Hopefully the support will continue for the extended period, possibly years, that it may take for her to recover.
