Digital Retargeting

Say you go to homedepot.com looking for a ladder, or a can of spray paint...and then you notice for a week , no matter where you go on the internet, you see advertisements for Home Depot, or Ladders or Spray Paint?

Retargeting.. been around 7 or 8 years now. Makes sense right? Maybe the day you looked for the ladder you were still window shopping.

Funny thing happened here on PA about 7 years ago. One of our local high and mighty's posted "Why I am seeing advertisements for Gay Porn on Paceadvantage.com?

Nothing against the gays. Just thought it was funny. Btw, he still posts here.

That might have been me, although what I recall was Russian dating sites.

I do not really understand how the engines work, but I suspect that when I open a page, whatever is mentioned on that page is assumed to be of interest to me.

So, by virtue of reading this page, which included this quote:

Quote:
Why I am seeing advertisements for Gay Porn on Paceadvantage.com?
it would logically assume that I had an interest in it.

"Welcome to 2018" (as PA said). It only gets worse from here. LOL

Good Gay Joke.

Q: Have you ever had sex with a man?

A. Umm. No, well , not really.

Q: Seriously, Have you ever had sex with a man?

A.
Well, yes, but only one time. I was drunk, at a party, it was 10 degrees out, snowing, and I really just needed a ride home, so I did it.

Q: How far away did you live?

A.
Two blocks.

To buy the Keyword 20 foot aluminum ladder at the top of google is $2.00 each click. Imagine 100 clicks costs you $200. So if you convert 15% of those, on a $100 dollar ladder, $1500 revenue at an average cost of acquisition of 13.33%

But what about the 85 people who did not buy? Those clicks now costs more, because we know you're a live prospect. A such, you're worth a premium and the click cost goes up. Especially if you put a ladder in your shopping cart and did not check out. Those clicks might now be $3.00 each.

Cart Abandonment = Buyers put a ladder in their shopping cart, but do not check out. Huge issue for Amazon.

So they follow you around for a week.

Easy fix for this, just go to Victoria's Secret website once a day, click on a couple items, and leave. Their ad's follow me everywhere.

That might have been me.

I googled "Cargo Hooks" for my son's truck, and somehow Google turned "Cargo Hooks into gay hookups.

Close with a Tip. If you are buying something online.

Put the item in your shopping cart while logged in.
Then leave it there for 2-3 days.

Watch your email, they'll send you an Incentive to come back and buy it. Usually 5% or more. I've seen 20%

This is particularly true of high priced products

Also recurring products like food or personal care items, golf balls, anything you buy at a cadence. They will negative acquisition to get you in the funnel.

It costs staples.com $30 acquire a $10.00 order for business cards. They eat that $20 loss because they want all future print and graphics projects. New business card means new everything...and that's worth $20 to them.

I was pretty shocked when ads for those scooter type wheel chairs showed up. The eerie part was they were for renting them at Disney World. I used the Verizon website to send a text. I had mentioned I should have rented one of those things instead of walking the park with a small recent meniscus tear of the knee. That is the only place I ever mentioned that. I have a flip phone and sausage fingers so if I text more than 3 words I use the Verizon site. I didn't know something was reading them, Verizon sucks!

Its all a spider web. In the T & C's of Verizon's agreement is something like

"In order to provide you the best experience"

Buried in there are the permissions that they need to "crawl" your texts and emails, and your web surfing to provide you a personal experience.

Algorithms, looking for phrases and words that can be monetized. This is what drives the innovation for these tools. Making Money.

And it works. Age, gender, income, hobbies, assets, travel habits, credit score, banking data, all lead to a personalized experience that "provides you the best experience"

Previously a newspaper ad was seen by everybody who read that printed version. Now when you go to your preferred news source online, you see things appropriate for you. Billions if not Trillions have been made by entrepreneurs who did it. Google being the King.

Conversely, they all pale in comparison to what the Govt is doing in the name of Freedom. They're trolling for Terrorists, Serial Killers, Mass Murder chatter, subversive groups, much worse than Verizon.
