Horse Racing Commissioner- Who?

We are working on a series of Podcasts/YouTube shows about the state of the sport. One thing that most can agree on is Horse Racing needs a Commissioner. In a perfect world who or what type or person would you like to be commissioner? And why you think they would be good for the sport?

Someone not involved in Horse Racing i.e. an independent lawyer type?
A career horseman like say Lukas type
A type of HR/ Media personality
Someone else (Please name)

Appreciate any and all feedback . Good Luck today, hopefully we all make some money!

I would say some state regulator who has proven through their track record that they have the best interest of the fans and the sport in mind.

Of course, the industry would never go for that kind of oversight.

I keep looking back to the pandemic and thinking that if there had been some sort of national commissioner - all of racing would have been shut down at once. No thank you for me.

Also, this thread seems more pertinent in the "General Horseracing Discussion" section (as do a few others of recent vintage).

Someone with a passion for clean racing like O'Dea would be great IMO unfortunately he passed away.

A career horseman might be decent but IMO it would have to be a JVB type or a Mark Casse type.

Who does most include? The bettors? Horse owners? Track owners?

My vote would be for Jerry Brown of Thorograph.

That would cover the integrity aspect. How well he might deal with the myriad permutations that constitute today's game is the tell.

This might be a fun topic but IMO a waste of time. The Horse Racing Industry can't have a commissioner without approval from congress waiving anti-trust laws (like Baseball). It can have a trade association but not a commissioner because racing is interstate commerce.

This is why racing is governed by the federal Interstate Horse Racing Act, allowing each state to set its own rules. More importantly, this is exactly why HISA was passed into law, giving a federal agency (the FTC) the right to set rules for each individual state.

Lori Petty - obviously.

She's already been selected to be the face of racing, and surely nothing about her qualifications has changed since then.

Who else has ever been selected to be the face of horse racing?
