I'd say too much too soon, I wouldn't count him out just yet, physically very impressive. Shipping him east for The Travers was clearly not the right move although it might benefit his maturation process in the long run.

I gave up. I moved Uncle Chuck into fourth on my rankings before the Travers, but I had doubts about the Los Alamitos race.
Yeah, I know I'm not a figuremaker. But he only beat Thousand Words by four lengths, and I have little respect for Thousand Words after watching his spring form. Okay, maybe Thousand Words improved. That is possible.
But Uncle Chuck also has a sprinter/miler pedigree as a half to Maclean's Music and Kentuckian. Sometimes pedigree isn't everything and he did win at nine furlongs already (eh...against Thousand Words though), so I included him in my tickets.
Now that I've seen Uncle Chuck at 1 1/4 miles, he will be happier as a sprinter or one-turn miler. He could win up to 1 1/8 against the right field.

I'm not a pedigree guy at all, but I was suspicious of his pedigree to get 10F also. Then people whose opinion I generally respect starting pointing that he had a long stride and finished really well in his last race. They sounded like the stretch out was going to be favorable for him.
That's one reason I try not to listen to too many opinions before I handicap a race myself. Sometimes those opinions are worse than your own but their thinking creeps into your thinking and throws you off.
Supposedly he acted up in the in the paddock. Maybe that had something to do with his performance too.

you never know w/ Baffert.
In the Shared Belief, Uncle Chuck swapped back to the wrong lead mid-stretch.
And in hindsight, after watching him fail to change leads in the Travers(albeit under a very hard drive), there's more of a chance of it being a 'flaw' than 'greenness'.
He certainly did not run like Grade 1 horse, in the Travers.
But he is a great physical specimen, he does have talent, and he does have a top barn.
I've given up on him for now, but I'll keep an eye on him.

Well, the Arrogate comparisons were a bit silly.

If TTL runs his race and has a clean trip the rest are running for second.

I don’t know that you give up on a horse like that. If you are talking the Derby.......yeah..... give up. He’s not going, if he does Tiz needs a target to mow down again. He done got cooked...... well done .

Uncle Chuck should be heard from again since he clearly has talent. He is also huge and very inexperienced. Once he gets more seasoning and foundation and also grown into his frame a bit more he might be more of a force. As it was he was seemed like a 15 year old boy on a hot summer day in the paddock, and with only 2 career starts, shipping him for this caliber did seem like a rush (maybe in hindsight). I wonder if Nadal and Charlatan were still around if he would have even been under consideration for the Derby at all...

One of my most profitable wagering angles is playing against a Baffert speed horse short on distance stamina going long in a stakes. I never understood the Derby hype on this horse. My guess if he was trained by anyone other than Baffert there would have been far less conversation. Brisnet and Equibase figures were fair but nothing to write home about. Questionable competition... beat four others in maiden and three in LosAl. Questionable breeding for a 10F challenge. While Nyquist was by Uncle Mo, the sire line has had far more success at 8.5F. The bottom side looks more speed oriented. I do think he will win his share of 8 1/2 F type events
