Hoping that top Japanese filly Almond Eye is coming for Breeders' Cup.
She deserves a thread of her own.

that would be great. but don't hold your breath. history shows they never send their top horses over for the breeders cup. there's just so much $$$ to win the fall in japan.

Every year a Japanese horse comes to the Kentucky Derby, he is overhyped, overbet and doesn't deliver. What makes this one different?

Being later in the year than normal, the horse will have time to validate his form.
In his first start he ran clockwise, set the pace, and absolutely blitzed the field at the top of the lane. Top Euro rider Ryan Moore was aboard for the win.
In his second start, he missed the break worse than Arrogate in Dubai and simply bided his time, cruised into contention rounding the far turn, assumed command and easily staved off the real closers.
In his most recent, he settled just behind the speed and looked like Nijinsky II in mid-stretch, cruising unasked in a gallop while the horses flanking him were under heavy pressure; rider asked the question and the colt quickly opened up about 5 lengths on the field and held sway to the wire.
Should be good for 14th place at Churchill...

Speaking of key races, the colt's second start (the Hyacinth Stakes) has produced 7 subsequent winners (6 horses total) out of a field of 14. No idea of the quality of the wins but...
..should be good for 12th at Churchill
Here's the entries for the Japan Dirt Derby a domestic Grade 1 (meaning it is sanctioned and conducted by a local Japanese government, not the JRA):

Possibly nothing, but it makes for an interesting story and it adds flavor to the race imho, esp in a weird year like this...

I'd say that's good for wagering on a different horse. This particular horse has a more American blend of speed and stamina. Will see if he can post a better finish than his contemporaries. It's not like the home field is anything to write home about once you look past TTL and HAP.

It's somewhere between difficult and impossible for me to evaluate the quality of these fields just by watching the races (though I've heard Paul Cornman could do that), but he looks like a serious racehorse to me.

Was it the 10 furlongs or was it the horrible muddy conditions?
Note at the 30s mark (on the timer) Cafe Pharoah bobbles sharply on the inside; not sure he was handling it. Perhaps being stuck on the inside was a problem, too.
Lot's of excuses. I'd still send him over, he'll be 50-1 and maybe even 1st time lasix.
