Dear Abby Pace Advantage Edition

Dear Abby,

I'm a millionaire as I have mentioned many times before, but a friend said he was going to give me $100 of winnings he made using my picks. I suspect he blew those winnings at the casino, but I want that c-note so bad, I emailed him again and he blew me off. What should I do?

Dear confused in make believe land,

You're kidding, right?

After giving away my opinions for free for quite a long time, I would say this....if you decide to do the homework and give away your hard work, your thoughts and ideas, then you have to expect NOTHING in return. If you feel the effort is worth something and don't want to do it for free...then qualify that up front (i.e. tell him you'll give him your selections for 10% or something). Otherwise, it's not worth $100. Just my opinion.

I would say...

invite your friend and his wife to come over for a weekend during the Spring Meet at Keeneland and to stay at your place.

Tell your friend that you want to continue helping him learn handicapping and give him a homework assignment that includes going to the Keeneland Library and looking up some historical information on the thoroughbred breed.

While he is away at the library, seduce his wife.

Give him all of your picks for free over the weekend and he will think you are a great guy and thank you before heading back home. As soon as he leaves, do a supervillain laugh.

.

I have this friend who is getting into horse racing. We both are big hog fans and everyone in our football circle knows I'm the "horse racing guy" so when he wanted to start wagering he came to me for advise.
Your friend: Mistake #1.

Quote:
I told him look, i will even help you out for free.
This is exactly how I respond when friends of mine ask me for advice.

But not fat chicks. They gotta pay.

Quote:
I don't need your money, and I don't know what your financial situation is like, but i you want to honestly learn how to gamble on horses I am more than willing to help you out.
I'm with you so far. Who cares about income and bankroll when considering taking up gambling in earnest? This guy's lucky to have you.

Quote:
Saturday being big cap day, oakalwn was the least of my concerns. I had the santa anita card all ready to go. I told him such. He says well if you like anything you don't have to tell me but if you would i would appreciate it.
Do all your friends come to you mealy-mouthed when they hit you up for something? Where is this exchange taking place? A freeway off-ramp? Or maybe in your private study at your heavily guarded estate on the day of your daughter's wedding?

Quote:
I mean he's a good guy and It's not like I'm the freaking knights Templar with my picks or anything, it isn't that serious, sure i told him what i was wagering on.
You chose...poorly.

Your picks cannot cross the Great Seal. That's the price of immortality.

Quote:
Saturday I was white hot.
No. Sounds like you were "red" hot.

Quote:
Like seriously not red boarding at all i was just on saturday.
I'm not trying to offend you, but...

...and then I offend you.

Quote:
I had a damn good day.
What about this? Is this a redboard?

Quote:
This guy calls me and is up about 700 dollars off my wagers.
Whoa! A third party redboard! This is a true innovation. Kudos!

Quote:
I mean I'm not broke i made money too i'm happy for him. at this point he says "man i know you didn't want me to send you any money but man i have to after this i want to keep getting your picks". I didn't like that too much..l i was supposed to be showing you how to handicap not running a daily selections service.
oh...what?...this "old thing"? I found it in the back of the closet and just threw it on...

Quote:
Anyway even then I telll him look seriously man just keep the money and take the wife out to eat or something, and let this be a lesson to what you can do if you get somewhat good at this.
Did you follow your own advice (free of charge) and take your ego out to eat? Or something...

Quote:
But e guy keeps going on talking about how he wants to send me 100 dollars or what not for helping him out.. im like dud if you really want to go ahead. he said he was going to the casino and would do so after he got back sunday.
Uh oh. Casino? Hope there isn't a dude in your football circle that they call the "casino guy". And if so, I hope he doesn't charge for friendly advice.

Quote:
so Sunday comes and i didn't' hear from him. he get back late Sunday night and ask me do I have any picks for today (Monday). I tell him that's a dark day for me (it's not i play fair grounds.. i just don't like the idea of giving out picks like i'm a service or something. he said he would get around to it Monday as he had a lot of stuff to do. today comes and i shoot him an email.. he is sending it WU (he's in little rock i li ve in lexington now) and he says "i thought you said you didn't want any money"
Well, at least you straightforward and honest with him (except about the Monday action at the Fair Grounds) that you didn't want the $100.

Hence the repeated requests on Sunday and Monday for the $100 that you did not want.

Quote:
it rubbed me the wrong way beucdase he was the one who insisted on doing it. id on't need your damn 100 dollars but don't tell me.. no.. insist you want to do something then when someone ask you did you do it, try to make it like i am making you do something you don't want to
This is exactly why relations between the white man and the Indian soured in the 19th century.

Quote:
what i think happened is he blew it all at the casino.
Friggin' Indians.

I told ya'. (This is not a redboard.)

Quote:
it sucks because we were pretty decent friends before this i just think that's kinda F'ed up the way he's handling it. and again he's gone from wanting to learn how to handicap to just wanting to copy my selections which I don't care for.
I saw this same scenario in season 3 of "Entourage". This guy came at you like he was E, trying to make his own way...but really, he's just a Turtle.

Yeah...oh yeah...oh yeah.

This is neither here nor there but....

My bestest friends love playing the horses too.

Does that make me a shallow human being?

Abby? Anybody?

It's gets funnier. Fair Grounds didn't run today, and they have not run on Monday for the entire meet.

Maybe PA could open up a fiction room for these stories.

good lord dude get a life.

to give you "proof" i have taken a screen shot of our email convo. i assure you i have better crap to do than to make this kinda crap up. i didn't think it would have to come to this as i'm not trying to get in a pissing contest.

i'm sorry the fact that i had a half decent day and the fact that i"m not poor seems to get under some people's skin but I mean damn bro.

anyway, back to the original point. I like to try to you know, help people learn how to wager.. you konw do your part to bring in fans so to speak, but I mean I feel kinda blah. and sure enough thursday he will email me asking me am i playing santa anita.

I guess I'm just kind of confused how you can say you play Fair Grounds on Mondays, but they haven't run on Monday all meet long.

Seems like a fair question.

My advice--do not have bestest friends who are horseplayers and look to your significant other for this role and make certain she /he is void of knowledge concerning taking risks on four legged animals who compete for money.
And to that Spaulding poster, you might give that
Luck creator David Milch a run for his money.
