Racism is a state of mind, your belief system. Who you are.
You don't apologise for that sincerely. You don't change your core beliefs. The best you can do apologise for getting caught.

But this whole incident is a big fat zero compared to REAL racism of the 50s and 60s. Those are making a BFD over this are insulting those who actually fought for civil rights.
People can make a racist remark, tell an off-color joke, and not be racists. Nobody can be an unconscious racist. Get real.
