Hope your employee is ok. I thought the same thing though. Google maps says you can make the drive in only 27 hours!!
One more,
A guy is in a casino and another guy comes over and says, "Buddy can you spot me twenty bucks I need to get my wife to the hospital?" He replies, "How do I know if I give you twenty bucks you won't just use it to gamble?". The first guy says, "Oh I got gamblin money".

Here is a story that happened a little more than a half dozen years after the one about the wife and I was newly divorced. I had a small group of work friends who would go to the LA County Fair in Pomona twice a year during the 3 week fair meet or however long it was. I usually did good there, the other guys were novices and I gave everyone my pace and speed figures and a brief run down and let them decide. This was just before Beyer figs were published in the Racing Form.
My friend Lou did pretty well playing exactas and over the course of 2 years and 4 trips to the Fair made $200-$500 after expenses each trip. So his first 4 ventures to the track he probably was up $1,000 and some change. I had been to Lou's home many a time and got along with his wife except for the time I got the 3 kid's a little too wound up before bedtime.
On the first day of the 3rd summer of our routine a chain of impossible long shots running second and the occasional win and I don't think Lou cashed many tickets and lost $150. He always told his wife exactly what happened on the previous trips and split the money. This time the $150 loss was met with a lecture. That went something like this:
"A married family man should not be hanging out with a single man who drinks and gambles like Bob, he is a bad influence. He is irresponsible and only thinks about having fun and partying because he is not married."

I think I got it sorted out. I say to my man "I've got good news and bad news, which ya want first?"
"Good news", he says.
"There's always horse-racing."
"What's the bad news?", he says. So I let him know that
"There's always horse-racing."
Then he says he's ok with that. Well, CHALLENGE ACCEPTED.

"Respect the Gambler" would be a great racehorse name.
Second to that is "Shameless Wager"

She made that sound like it's a bad thing.

The comical part was she liked me just fine till the trip to the track where Lou lost the $150. I wasn't irresponsible, I worked a good job 50 hours a week, went to the gym 6 days a week, was restoring a classic car, had no debts, paid off vehicles and the 20% down payment for a new house I was shopping for sitting in the bank. I even had recently packed my tools out and helped Lou put a new engine in the family van. I came down and helped with other home projects and his wife invited me to stay over numerous times. I was able to get a lot done because I never required more than an average of 4 hours sleep a day. I was the world's greatest guy, until the day Lou lost the $150.

I figured there would be more stories to share, it looks like many of you have taken proactive measures in the past to prevent the problems my friends and I had.

I've been married twice, a total of 41 years, neither one of my wives ever complained about my gambling. But I've never lost a lot of money in any given year, even when I had a bad year. If I had lost a lot of money, I would expect them to complain.
Tips for getting out of a cold streak: be more selective, don't bet favorites, specialize, for instance, only bet certain types of races, or focus on horses dropping in class. If you only bet on horses that drop in class, or are taking a hidden drop in class, it's almost impossible to have long run outs.
