Church existed before the New Testament..
It is the Church, who though the Ecumenical Councils specified the canon Of the New Testament, identifying the twenty-seven divinely inspired books while rejecting the Apocrypha. This is exactly what we mean when we say that the Church guarantees the validity and authority of the Bible.
These Fathers of the Church , who decided what to include and what to reject to the canon of the Bible, interpreted them and were accepted by the fullness of the Church as inspired by the Holly Spirit.
The Bible has only one and extremely consistent interpretation, and this is the one that was provided to us by the Holly Tradition, the Seven Ecumenical Councils and the Fathers of the Church like John Chrysostom, Gregory of Nyssa, Basil The Great , Maximus the Confessor and John of Damascus, just to name a few.

It still all comes down to letting other people do your thinking for you.

The engagement was announced last Christmas. Then several months ago they broke up. I thought it was off. Only last week was I informed that it was back on.

But the "church" was neither divinely inspired or infallible anymore than all the people of Israel were under the Old Covenant or any self-proclaimed authority, e.g. Scribes and Pharisees, etc. Only God's chosen prophets and apostles were inspired and infallible -- not any self-proclaimed authority.
Scripture is quite clear: Only God's word is truth not the words of wannabe leaders, teachers or prophets. Only God's Word is exalted even above his Name.
Ps 138:2
2 I will worship toward thy holy temple, and praise thy name for thy lovingkindness and for thy truth: for thou hast magnified thy word above all thy name.
KJV
And when Paul preached the gospel to the Bereans, did they blindly take his word for it or did they carefully search the scripture for confirmation? And since they did ultimately rely upon the authority of scripture even when an Apostle preached to them, how much more should men today rely solely upon God's word when men not divinely inspired or infallible preach and teach?

But you and other skeptics would level the same charge against the Sola Scriptura crowd.

Elon Musk: Developing artificial intelligence would be as dangerous as ‘summoning a demon’
......“In view of its potential to be possibly the biggest game-changer ever, do you have any plans to enter the field of artificial intelligence?” one audience member asked.
“I think we need to be very careful about artificial intelligence,” Musk replied. “If I were to guess what our biggest existential threat is, it’s probably that.”
“There needs to be some sort of regulatory oversight,” he continued, “both at the national and international level, just to make sure we don’t do something very foolish.”
“ Because with artificial intelligence, we are summoning a demon. You know all those stories, there’s the guy with the pentagram and the holy water, and he’s sure he can control the demon? How’d that work out?”
Musk then noted that HAL 9000, the rogue AI from Stanley Kubrick and Arthur C. Clarke’s 2001: A Space Odyssey, “would be easy. Artificial intelligence would put it to shame. HAL’s like a puppy dog.”
See what materialistic God-hating scientists have done now. Summoning demons

I don't know which one to pick. Choosing the Israelites as his "chosen people"...and then watching them as they rejected his only son? Deciding that the only way to forgive a sin -- committed against HIMSELF -- would be through the spilling of the blood of his own son? Sitting idly by without lifting a finger...as the world burns from within and without? So many more...

Pope Francis has No Problem With Evolution and The Big Bang
Pope Francis is an interesting Pope.
He's once again given sedevacantists fodder to believe the Chair of Peter has been occupied by an imposter.
"The beginning of the world is not the work of chaos that owes its origin to something else, but it derives directly from a supreme principle that creates out of love. The Big Bang, that today is considered to be the origin of the world, does not contradict the creative intervention of God; on the contrary, it requires it. Evolution in nature is not in contrast with the notion of [divine] creation because evolution requires the creation of the beings that evolve. [...]
When we read in Genesis the account of creation [we are] in danger of imagining that God was a magician, complete with a magic wand that can do all things. But he is not."

How can that be?
I thought that Popes were elected by the faithful hierarchy.
