At this point, slots are basically video games. With everyone having a nice big hdtv at home, there's really no reason to leave the house to play these games.

Then maybe Vegas and AC would be good spots to open sub aquatic real estate offices. Sell a bridge here and there as well. Slots are not where you find gamblers. That's where you find the losers. Once the novelty wears off there will be a tapering off. It happens with any business.

Racing has made its bed and now it can lay in it. We all knew it was a band-aid solution.

Ok. I don't get the "novelty" thing or "they'll go under when people realize what they are" attitude towards casinos and slots. ALL I said was slots are not new and have been around for like 100 years and still going strong obviously. That's all. Hey I'd love racing to out do them but I doesn't seem that way.

People have had plenty of things to do and new technologies at home every decade since slots were invented. People do leave their house to goto casinos. But just my opinion Again, I'd love to see racing outdo casinos but from what I see, it's just not happening unfortuantely.

I'm not here to blame casinos or slots or whoever for racings problems. They're doing fine from what I see. I'm worried about racing and what can be done to fix it problems. Racing has to look at itself, its problems, its customers and do the right thing and better things

I know they will never go under but with the proliferation of these casinos all over the country the thrill will wear off. It's not like when there was just Vegas Reno and AC as the main gambling outlets and people had to drive hours or fly to be held a captive audience. In that scenario you had x amount of dollars being spent in a few gambling locations. Now the scale will tip and you will have many gambling outlets chasing the same money. It has to yield a diminished return. Supply and demand.
There will always be some suckers to pour there money into the one arm bandits. I just don't think they will continue to enjoy a heyday like the last year or two. JMO but I could be wrong. I can tell you this however, you will never see me at one of those machines.

My post was about you saying "novelty" towards slots. The word novelty means something brand new( that will wear off). Slots have been around forever and their "hey day" has not been the last "two years". The casino people/slot people are not racing people, slots are a casino game in the casino parts, not racings parts. Was talking about the world novelty... that's all.

Shouldacoulda Hey, I'm with ya here, just one disagreement. I couldn't agree with you more on most of what you said. Just didn't get the novelty part about slots when they are casinos bread and butter and have always thrived for decades and are not affiliated with racing. I do agree that they shouldn't put casinos on every block in the country and water down the fun of it but I think casinos will always thrive no matter what. I mean these casinos are looking to get into table games now and they will soon look to get into sports booking and everything else that makes big bucks pour in. I think they'll thrive no matter what IMO.

Racing needs to get back near the top and get back to what its customers want and always loved. Lets have our kids and grandkids, etc have this great sport around and not a thing of the past. That's all.

I agree with what you are saying. Racing has played a role in my family for a long time. My grandmother was raised on a farm in Ireland and was a single mom of 3 during the depression. My dad fondly told me the story of how she won the money to buy her first electric washing machine at Belmont. It was a whopping $22.00. I'm sure there are many similar stories like that.

This whole Raceino thing perplexes me in many ways. I feel it is turning into a form of indirect taxation and not a thing to help racing. What bothers me is now that they know it is not working, they are just throwing their hands up in the air (conveniently) and stripping the horse racing industry of the money instead of trying a different tact. They didn't listen to anybody before, I doubt they will now. How many more people will lose their jobs? Personally I will boycott the casinos installed in these tracks because of this bait and switch tactic. I think it stinks! I will however continue to support horse racing.

Another point I am at odds with is the implied blanket label of horse players as gamblers not savvy enough to avoid these low win percentage Video Slot Machines.

If you've ever been to Foxwoods at the beginning of the month to see the senior citizens wasting their SS check to try and hit it big at one of these thieving machines then maybe you will have the same disdain for them as I do. It made me sick and I haven't been to a casino since.

Oh I know, people do lose a lot of hard earned money on these slots and as I said, I am with you big time on staying away from them. BUt who plays them mostly, not us players or younger people. Also it is frustrating at the "give up" by the people with the racing and "racinos". So many people here and everywhere said what would happen and WHAT should be done for a better outcome and of course no one listened. Now it's costing jobs and costing us and our future our great sport. It's horrible. Slots and games were never the answer. They could have NEVER been the answer. Hopefully something surprising comes about or happens for the good of the game and sport.

Yup. Bait and switch. This was never a secret on this site.

On the brighter side -- maybe this is the mechanism for contracting the market, reducing the number of tracks, increasing fields and competitiveness at those tracks that can refuse "Racino Fever" long enough to let those facilities that contracted it to die out.

I mean, as a fan and casual historian of the game, it's a damn shame to lose Aqueduct -- but if it strengthens the races that run on tracks elsewhere, that may be a good thing for the long-term health of the game.
