You really think that statement was bad enough to get him fired?

Fired for expressing his opinion which I'm sure most would agree with.

I knew Don Cherry coached the Amerks but I did not know that he began his coaching career in the next town over from me.

Al Vyverberg was the hockey instructor and manager of the rink where I first learned to play hockey years ago.

Don Cherry was an honest man and he always called it as he saw it.
He upset a lot of hockey players and their mothers over the years, but they knew he was being honest.
I didn't always agree with him but at least he had the guts to provide a counter-opinion to the politically correct mainstream.
Of course, that's what got him fired in the end. (CBC and Sportsnet have been looking for an excuse to fire him for the last 15 years. Fan pressure always saved his bacon.)
If he'd have stayed in his own lane (hockey), he would have been okay.
But then again that wouldn't be the Don Cherry many of us have come to enjoy and love.

Why am I not surprised that an "intellectual Blue Blood" such as yourself would think that?

Don Cherry had this to say:

"I have just learned that I've been fired by Sportsnet for comments made on Coach's Corner November 9th."
"I know what I said and I meant it. Everybody in Canada should wear a poppy to honour our fallen soldiers."
"I speak the truth and I walk the walk. I have visited the bases of the troops, been to Afghanistan with our brave soldiers at Christmas, been to cemeteries of our fallen around the world and honoured our fallen troops on Coach's Corner."
"To keep my job, I cannot be turned into a tamed robot. I would have liked to continue doing Coach's Corner. The problem is if I have to be careful of everything I say, it isn't Coach's Corner."
"I want to thank everyone who has watched Coach's Corner over the past 35 years."
"Remember to wear your poppy to honour our fallen soldiers."

I don't know Don Cherry other than what I've heard about him these last two days. But the above post earns my respect...and I tip my hat to him. The man is true to himself...and that, sadly, is a rarity in our world today.

He has a right to his opinion. They have a right to fire him. Turn the page. He's 85 years old and been a caricature of himself for years on Coaches Corner. I'm guessing Brian Burke will replace him. Excellent choice. Keeps the fight crowd there, ex GM of the Leafs. Been a player agent, he's seen the game from all sides. Isn't afraid to express himself. GO LEAFS GO!!!!
