Good for him...calling the competition out and putting up the money at the same time. What's wrong with that? Good for him. It's like the old days.
It's artificial. All he needs to do is run his lightly raced horse in existing races. It's not as though there isn't an established path for establishing who the best 3 year old is.

To be fair, he's not calling for something artificial. It could be in the Belmont, or the Haskell, or the Travers, or the BC Classic. Whereever they next meet.

He wants to prove he has the best 3yo there is plenty of time and it will not cost him a cent more.

No doubt. Whatever you want to say about the lawsuit, his wealth or skipping the other TC races, it’s a sporting move in a game of alleged sportsmen.

He can always donate anything he wants to.

He's including the charity element here for other reasons

What's the message he's trying to convey? Seriously?

If it's not, "none of you bums were getting by my horse anyway so he should have been able to do what he likes to you, and I'll pay you $5m if you prove me wrong" I'm at a loss to understand his point.

Does he have one of the best 3 year olds in training, if not the best? Sure.

Does he need to throw down 5 million in front of four other sets of connections to prove that? No, that will happen as the year progresses, or it won't. On Derby Day Maximum Security was probably the best horse in the race by Travers Day he might not be.

To me, its just a cheap move to call out the owners of the horses. Right or wrong, two jockeys filed objections. Right or wrong, MS was DQ'ed by the stewards. He is ducking out on the Preakness. He is/will duck out on the belmont and the Travelers. I think this shows his true values.
All I see is an owner trying to buy horse of the year, If MS doesn't make horse of the year, he will sue.
The more Mr. West does things like this, the more I see a man who could have told the jockey, "win no matter what the cost, I don't care who you kill."

If he had said if any horse comes in before MS, he would donate any amout of money on the day of the Preakness(or Belmont) and donate the entire purse if MS did win, that would have shown some class.
War of will is running in the Preakness, MS is not. If MS can't win the TC(he did win the derby) he can't be bothered running in the TC.

Sorry, but I have more respect for any owner/ horse who runs in all the TC races and doesn't win in any of them than I ever will for west/MS.

we will never know how MS would do in the preakness now. Mr west has robbed us of that.

What part of "No justification is needed" don't you understand ?
Mr. West is willing to donate millions to a great cause............and you have a problem with it ?
And remind me again.......whose money is it ?

I don't have a problem with donations. I have a big problem with cloaking cynical publicity stunts with charity.

If Gary West wants to donate upwards to 10-20 million dollars to former jockeys in wheelchairs who could really use some help................you don't have a right to have a problem with it.
