That's NBC's job.

Horse deaths are a story. If you don't want networks covering them, well, the sport can always refuse the TV money so nobody sees them.

I voted hurts.

I heard too many casual fans upset after the DQ. Lots of allegations of 'fixed' and uninformed opinions about 'the house' making more money by DQing a favorite/second choice. Average person thinks the track makes more money if a longshot wins (obviously wrong - but that's their mindset).

Add in the top finishers are skipping the race, I just don't see much interest in the Preakness from the general public and I don't expect many casual fans who had tickets on MS being real eager to watch or wager on the Preakness (or any race in the future).

This was a big turn off to casual fans. Sure, it generated Google search results - but I doubt many of them were people who were thinking 'Ooooh, the winner was DQ'd - I really want to play the horses now!'

I don't disagree with your sentiment. Andy Beyer was on with Mike Watchmaker this week , he said "Good Luck trying to Gin-Up interest in this Preakness"

I've been watching the numbers. Not just google, but other tools that measure topics and mentions. I have it UP.. big. We'll see. Good Luck Today.

It might add a few fractions of a percentage point to the ratings if Koepka continues to trounce the PGA field and sucks any excitement from that event. If he backs up any and a Spieth run turns it into match play, I can easily imagine many viewers totally ignoring the Preakness.

Tiger scratch sent from heaven . Koepka vs. Preakness can't make up those lengths.

You can cover the story with out showing a dead horse on the track.
Sorry, it was NOT covering a story - it was exploited the situation.
If the idiot host the kept getting it wrong every other sentence he uttered had a heart attack and fell off the stage, do you thing they would have focused the camera on him?

And NBC not covering racing would be fe with me. They suck at it.
Even Todd Schrupp does it better.

The track doesn't care which horse wins, favorite or longshot. They take their cut off the top. They only care if there is a big minus pool with ultra short favorites which wasn't the case. Of course, the average person thinks the track is like the casino where you play against the house and would be just as likely to think they make less money if the longshot wins and have to make a bigger payoff or if the favorite wins and have more people to pay off.

I don't think the DQ will matter either way. To the average person it's yesterday's news. To the racing fan, half will see it as bad and half as good so the effect will cancel out.
I think the ratings will drop since most people only care about the Preakness if there is a Derby winner going because of a possibility of a Triple Crown.

Congrats to those who predicted a poor rating .

I was dead wrong about this opinion.

That is exactly what I try to explain to them, but have had a couple people then shift to 'they may have had wagers...' theories.

Haven't had a single person reply that they now understood. They're all still mad and think something nefarious happened. Even if they aren't sure what.

PS. tracks make more when favorites win.

More breakage in their pocket.
