Looks like he can run "12"s all day long. So much for being a sprinter.

Legit. Possible. Freak.
Could have been claimed for $16K.
A story that could be greatness.

Hidden Scroll still has a shot, but did not like how he acted when passed in the last race. Looks to be a need the lead type.
Harvey Wallbanger, Bourbon War, and Code of Honor, seem to be the same but Code of Honor is the best of them.
The Bodexpress has the price and looks like the distance is going to improve him.
As pointed out Maximum Security was started in MC ranks and hope that deters some people. After all, if you look at his works coming in to that race they were slow and the trainer might have based his opinion on that. Moved up to protected ranks and even with the slow works, won again, then repeated the win impressively. Will sit two wide, just behind the and looks like he can take that one when he wants.

$30 across returned $960.
Bodexpress was wavering, lugging. Juarez was into this horse hard, the 1/4 pole to home. Nobody made up much on on him. I thought he looked cooked.

Equibase scored the race a middling 102. Soft fractions to the 3/4 then an extremely inpressive sub 36 second final 3/8th. Last time I remember seeing that on the Derby trail was Strike the Gold and he got a blanket of roses.

Do I have to keep the same trainer? Do I get the same results?

cheap speed hits pay dirt.
all it took was a less than stellar field and early fractions that were criminal......not to mention the improper handling of scroll.
not impressed @ this years fla derby....might have to auto toss like the wood, which has proven to be dogchit in the derby for years.

Give some credit to Luis Saez.
Castellano/Mott/Pace exposed a bit of weakness, and Saez jumped all over it, took the initiative and controlled the pace.

So what do you suggest the horse had done in that situation to translate to derby success?

I confess I was skeptical of American Pharoah after he ran a slug of a 3/4 mile in the Rebel before turning on the jets. Pretty much what MS did at Gulfstream. Soft fractions or not, a theft horse typically doesn't post a sub 36 second final 3/8th and sub 13 second final 1/8th. I'll also point out the horse did press the pace in his second start. Add in two triple digit BSFs while crossing off several strong Derby angles you have a very legit horse.
I do wonder how good the win was when four other horses also posted fast final 3/8th. Possible this was party result of slow pace. That's about my only knock. I'll use him.

The "cheap speed" ended up being Hidden Scroll. As near as I can tell, Maximum turned in the best prep race of the season. Yes better than Game Winner and Improbable. And his pace figures from the race say that the distance of the Derby is well within reach. Moves to the #1 spot in the run for the roses.
