Amazon cancels plans to build corporate campus in New York City
By J. David Goodman | Feb. 14, 2019
The New York Times:

Quote:
Amazon on Thursday canceled its plans to build an expansive corporate campus in New York City after facing an unexpectedly fierce backlash from some lawmakers and union leaders, who contended that a tech giant did not deserve nearly $3 billion in government incentives.
The company, as part of its extensive search for a new headquarters, had chosen Long Island City, Queens, as one of two winning sites, saying that it would create more than 25,000 jobs in the city.
But the agreement to lure Amazon stirred an intense debate about the use of public subsidies to entice wealthy companies, the rising cost of living in rapidly gentrifying neighborhoods and the city’s very identity.
“A number of state and local politicians have made it clear that they oppose our presence and will not work with us to build the type of relationships that are required to go forward,’’ Amazon said in a statement.
The company’s decision is a major blow for Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo and Mayor Bill de Blasio, who had set aside their differences to bring the company to New York.
But it was at least a short-term win for insurgent progressive politicians led by Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, whose upset victory last year occurred in the area where Amazon had planned its site. Her win galvanized the party’s left flank, which mobilized against the deal, and on Thursday she seemed to revel in the company’s retreat.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo lambasted politicians such as Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and others over Amazon's decision to leave New York City. Opponents of the deal with the tech giant had "put their own narrow political interests above their community," he said.
"[A] small group [of] politicians put their own narrow political interests above their community -- which poll after poll showed overwhelmingly supported bringing Amazon to Long Island City -- the state's economic future and the best interests of the people of this state," Cuomo said in the statement, which did not mention Ocasio-Cortez or other lawmakers by name. "The New York State Senate has done tremendous damage. They should be held accountable for this lost economic opportunity."

Occasional Cortex can't support a company getting tax credits when they should be paying more. This is like stealing fro the people and giving to the big bad businesses who are too rich already. Amazon does not owe any federal corporate tax this year and is getting a refund near $128 million.

When Trump breaks up a deal he deems as a bad deal for the people, seems ok.
Maybe this is a bad deal. Bezo’s is a savage. Amazon is maniacal & predatory perhaps rightfully so as a for-profit.
NY has healthy economy , top 15, CA, MA, top 10’s.
Amazon did’nt pick a empty lot in a ghost town. TX , NC also tops.
Northeast migration to warmer climates has been happening 200 years.
Migrating south or west offers a higher quality of life for much less money and taxes. Thats been forever. All good because Americans have freedom of movement and can make choices. All on the same team though. America is a good place to be.

I'm not in favor of corporate welfare but this would have created many jobs. I'm not sure if AOC's exact district includes Long Island City but their would have been a positive effect on the region in general.

I just saw NY Senator Michael Gianaris being interviewed on CNBC. He was against the Amazon deal. But what shocked me, the only tax subsidy that Amazon was guaranteed was $500 million. The biggest tax subsidy only kicked in if they created 25,000 jobs. I don't see how anyone can consider this a win. The reason why Amazon needs the subsidies is because NY state has such high taxes in the first place, not to mention the cost of cutting through all of the red tape and delays that usually make opening a big business difficult in New York.
This reminds me of when Cuomo lost the Jets and the Giants because he wouldn't subsidize a new stadium. That did not save NY tax payers money. Over the long run, it cost them money, and jobs.

Cuomo and DeBlasio made a rare holy alliance to put this deal together without major input from city and state lawmakers. The terms of the subsidies to Amazon were not made public and this is the end result. The very basics were not explained by the major parties to the deal namely Cuomo and DeBlasio. It appears that they colluded to deliberately mislead the public, city and state lawmakers of the subsidies offered to Amazon. The explanation of the basic pros and cons of the deal was absent. They, the Pols, shammed the public.

I've seen detractors say the transportation system can't support 25k jobs in the area. Also the issue of gentrification is of concern to them. Fine. If they don't want the jobs, that's that.
Something tells me that when we have an economic downturn NYC will wish those 25k jobs were there.
I'm just glad I live in an area where the state and local politicians are business friendly, and embrace change and an improving society. For those that pull back and fight change, they can live with their future consequences, and I get the feeling they are comfortable with it

I think DeBlasio's cover them all for free crazy talk added to the decision... to bail. And the Queen of Bonkers was further cause to RUN!!!.
The new New York the Vampire State... would of sucked Amazon dry.

The salary for the proposed 25,000 jobs was an average of $150,000.
The reason NYC was selected was that there are probably only 5 other cities that have enough engineers to meet their hiring requirements. NYC was also close enough to pockets of more smarty-pants at MIT, Princeton, Harvard, etc..
Amazon is deploying robots to eliminate traditional warehouse work. That does not seem like a good long-term bet no matter where you are in the USA.
25,000 jobs for Long Island City: Population 20,000?
Amazon is trying to get waterfront property and re-make the entire landscape. Its progress for sure and a good thing. But people who live there now see it as a push out. If you own a home, probably a good thing, If you are a worker bee with nothing, then you are out.

Idiots let the tax money from 25k jobs walk away.
Amazon isn’t going anywhere. Those jobs would be there 50 yrs from now.

NY is a shitshow.
Cuomo is blaming Florida for "stealing" NY residents due to (shh..., get this) lower taxes.
3.5 million people have left CA and NY for the less taxing states of Texas and Florida.
Now 25K in jobs and Billions in taxable future income is nothing. ****ing amazing.

Worker bees with determination, goals, and drive tend to move up the chain. It's called the American Dream and it's available to whoever wants it. Believe in it, you'll do what it takes to get a piece of the pie. If you don't, then you eventually get left behind.
A lot of people in NY just saw a good opportunity disappear. Pity.
