Good read, and it's been said on many forums already.

Nyc is at a crossroads given current leadership. Like the mayor said, they went thru bankruptcy in the 70s.... Is the train headed back that way now, or do they regain positive momentum

Amazon got 3 billion in tax breaks from NY. However, the estimates were that Amazon would be paying 27 billion in taxes over 10 years. AOC is under the impression that NY was going to pay Amazon 3 billion out of the states coffers. She now wants to use the same 3 billion (which does not exist) for social programs. Stupid is as stupid does.

NY to AOC - we know you met well - but you F***ed us.

this is how stupid liberals are. They all confuse tax breaks with subsidies. They act like they're the same. They're really polar opposites. But don't try to tell that to the dimwits.

You do not give them the credit that they are due, confuse tax breaks with subsidies is not what they are trying. If they were as stupid as you say they would not be such a problem today. They count on the media being with them and not saying it like delayjf does so concisely. They figure it is like a snow avalanche that they can manage to crush the opposition.

AOC is that stupid. She said that instead of giving $3 billion to Amazon, NYC could take that money and create 25,000 new jobs on its own.

Quote:
What’s great is that our economy, our local economy, is already growing. So I firmly believe that if we want to take that $3 billion dollars that we were willing to give to Amazon and invest it in our local community, we can do that. We can make those jobs. We can make 25,000 jobs. But we don’t have to give away and allow our subway system to crumble so that Amazon essentially owns a part of New York City. We can create 25,000 jobs with Mom-and-Pops; we can create 25,000 jobs with companies that are willing to come to the table, but we should not be giving away our infrastructure, our subway system, our schools, our teachers' salaries, our firefighters' budgets, to a company that has not shown good faith to New Yorkers. And we can ask for more because we deserve more.

P.S. In the article linked above, Joe Scarborough rips her for being stupid, although he is polite enough not to use that word.

Sure cut off the commie logic that they use and believe in because you think that is the way to beat them. Obama used the same commie logic in the Congress and a representative yelled "you lie", still they passed it without looking what was in it like Nancy Pelosi told them to do. The point is when you get played, you become the stupid one. NY got played.

I've been reading Bob Lefsetz' free newsletter a lot lately. He is an attorney, a music industry analyst, and also comments on technology and society. I don't always agree with him, but he does have his pulse on social media and technology.

He wrote about Amazon moving out of NYC and AOC in this week's blog. It's worth a read. Here are some excerpts:

https://lefsetz.com/wordpress/2019/02/15/amazon/

Quote:
Corporations are the enemy.

I would have expected this message to come from the arts first. But the arts have been infiltrated like PBS. Whether it be corporations supporting that which the public does not, or musicians sucking up to the man to get paid.

But AOC doesn’t get paid. She was a bartender before.

I didn’t see this coming. The youth stole America from the man in the sixties and then retreated after Kent State, licking their wounds. Then Reagan legitimized greed and for forty years we’ve seen a separation between corporations and the regular folk, between rich and poor, the income inequality gap keeps widening and we’re told to pay fealty to the “job creators” as we lower their taxes and incentivize them while they laugh all the way to the bank.
Quote:
But for the past few decades its been about sponsorship in the music business. Get some of that corporate money. Whether it be the Amex or Citi pre-sale or the whiskey or telco signage. Acts thought there was no cost. Never mind the chilling effect, they’ve been left behind, lost to the change of time as the wheels of society keep grinding.

Trump illuminated the change. That America wasn’t what the pundits and media said it was. Instead, there were millions of voters disenchanted with the way things were going who were angry that they were left behind in an era of globalization. Sure, they liked their flat screens and smartphones assembled elsewhere, but they were wary of not having jobs, angry at those who took them away, blaming not the corporations themselves as much as the foreigners and immigrants.
Quote:
And then came the Trump blowback. When the enlightened youngsters were sick of their forefathers selling out to the middle, and the aforementioned corporations. Yes, it’s a left and right issue, both take the corporate money, are beholden to the man. But the youngsters…we’ve been reading about their college debt, their inheritance of the national debt and their lack of opportunity for years...
Quote:
As for tax rates… Why do corporations end up paying less than the top rate, if they pay anything at all? Sure, the rank and file is unsophisticated, thinking a 70% income tax rate would be from dollar one and apply to them, just like the “Death Tax,” but the truth is there are smart youngsters, who do know they’re being scammed, and they’re informing their constituents, and the whole world is changing as the old guard is clueless.
Quote:
It is not business as usual in America anymore. The youth may not have money, but that does not mean they’re unintelligent, without the power of reasoning. It no longer adds up. Corporations are not people. PEOPLE ARE PEOPLE!
Quote:
As for Cuomo and DeBlasio negotiating in secret… Homey don’t play that no more. The internet is all about sunlight. And if you tell someone what’s best for them they question it.

And what is the price? The rank and file are sick of paying the price for these corporations.

This is a wake-up call for all of America. This is not an isolated event.

Now we’ve got pushback.

Tread lightly, for your footing may be shaky.

Go get em!

“I was invited [to New York City] by some financiers to make a presentation to them about why it’s so much more profitable for them to leave New York and come to the state of Texas. We have a growing and thriving finance industry in the state of Texas — much lower cost. And while New York is imposing more taxes on them, in Texas, this session we are working on cutting taxes in Texas.”

Texas is a great place for amazon to move to. Lots of wide open space to build. Coming to NYC would have disrupted many people. It sounds like New Yorkers chose quality of life over money. Or as Bob Lefsetz said in harsher terms in my post above: "The rank and file are sick of paying the price for these corporations."

For amazon, why go where you're not wanted? If Texas wants you then that's the place to go.
