This is a very good thing. I'm assuming distance will be reported diligently when I say that, and no reason to think it won't.

Pat mentions meters, he can't help himself. That is never going to fly here in my lifetime. As a figure guy, the measurement system is irrelevant as long as it is accurate.

what if a horse is not paying attention, balks and crosses the start line 0.48 seconds behind the first horse that crossed the start line .... do your figures adjust for that?

No, I wouldn't want to adjust for poor starts.

so are you adjusting for poor starts now?

the current run-up method gives the first to the start line a lead doesn't it?

No, I don't, no different than any other troubled trip.

I wrote about it here a long time ago, fully aware of the issues run up causes:

That was a very good explanation of one of a long list of problems that would get corrected if this would become an industry standard.

I especially liked this example you gave in the comments section.

I posted this elsewhere, but imagine if the Olympics used this method to time the 100m dash. It is doubtful Usain Bolt would hold any records because he is a slow starter. Somebody else would trip the beam, and he would still win, but his time would be slower than it would be if he were to run the same exact race alone, or against a field in which he was the best out of the blocks.
