The NFL Today

I think it has become the most boring and predictable major sport in the USA.

The games, the play calling is so predictable as to be laughable. I had so much more more fun watching the Americans vs. the Euros in the Solheim cup (golf ) over the weekend as opposed to the NFL. To nights Colts/Jets game is a yawn fest as were most of the weekend games.

Well, when they throw a flag every other play....football was never meant to be played that way. I'm sorry, I saw many calls that should of been no flags. One guy juked a defender, the defender fell and somehow that was called offensive pass interference. The crap about checking receivers is awful. I can see all the defenseless hits stuff for safety but the holding calls are ridiculous. I love football but you are onto something. That was a week of shitty football and bunch of refs were front and center on TV.....ruining the game. At one point, I myself was ready to walk away and turn the channel.....that crap with flags is just about unwatchable. When games are being decided by the refs.....I'm with you.

I think the NFL is having a developing problem. 5 or 10 years ago, I never would've said, or thought that. As recent as 2 years ago, I'd have the Red Zone on for 6 hours straight. Now? I don't even have the Red Zone this year. And amazingly, life goes on.

With all the concussion news, I think its not good for the sport at any level. You hear more parents not allowing their kids to play at the HS level. This doesn't happen overnight, but could eventually erode the quality of play at the higher levels. So now they try to protect the players, but now you have a high rate of pass interference calls. I believe they need to put a limit on how many yards can be awarded for PI. Maybe 20 or 25 yards. Seeing 40-50 yard gains on balls that may not even be caught is hurting the game.

While it would slow down the game I believe any penalty that results in a
gain of over 10 yards or gives an automatic first down when there were
more than 10 yards to go needs to be automatically reviewed. People seem
to forget penalties are called from one viewing full speed at field level with
7 guys watching 22 fast and or large men. There are going to be hordes of
mistakes with the current system.

It is brutal. This Sunday was the worst I could ever remember watching, and it turns out it was the week with the most penalties in the history of the NFL. You know it is bad whenever there is a big play announcers almost always let you know there are "NO FLAGS!" on those plays where there actually are none.

Some of these games when you see certain line movement or an important franchise needs a boost (to make the playoffs, to save their season etc...), it's very easy to think that you see something going on.

Like the untimely holding penalties 2nd down and short after good runs on first down leading to one team's eventual punt.

Like the questionable pass interference penalties that look like either nothing or defensive holding at most, keeping another team's drive going.

Other times it's just a nuisance.

I saw a guy lunge toward a QB on a blitz who just threw the ball away and hit him around the ankles. Not in a dirty way, he was just stretched out on the effort. Penalty for hitting the QB low 1st down

I'm not a fanatic like some are, but I do enjoy the NFL when there is an actual good game.

First thing to look for after a score.

When I watch these games with people who are rooting for the 'good guys' we always wait ten mssissippis before celebrating we know there could be a 'reversal' so I don't spontaneously root like I used to, same with racing, gotta wait till its offichy as you never know when they'll just decide to randomly not pay you.

I agree guys, and the last couple years, watch the players. The first thing they do is swivel their heads around the field scanning it for flags after the whistle............even when their is not a score, on every pass play. That's just pathetic.

I think the Seahawks success is one of the reasons for the penalties. They lead the league in penalties due to the high amount of defensive holding penalties and they got into the Super Bowl two straight years. Some coaches, and Carroll definitely fits into this group, feel that it's smart to cheat and hold because in the long run the penalties don't hurt you as much as you gain by constantly holding the other team's top offensive players. Holding is part of Carroll's game plan.

The Patriots did this years ago in the playoffs against the Colts, holding Peyton Manning's recievers, and the Colts complained to the NFL after the loss. The next year was the first year where the league changed the pass interference rules and, of course, that changed the game and created all of these passing records.

There's holding on every play. Every play. Best time to hold? After they just called it; because they won't call it back-to-back..but I think I saw that phenomenon proved wrong Sunday.

I love the NFL, but I'll agree, our relationship isn't like it used to be. Agree with the sentiments here as it's getting to the point it's just noise in the background while im doing stuff around the house..except when Pittsburgh is on in this region..

The Patriots also did it in the Super Bowl upset win over the Rams. They were so physical to the Rams' receivers, the league adopted rule changes before the following season.

I doubt the Patriots would try to stretch the rules

To me, the difference between college football and the NFL is like daylight and dark. It's much harder wagering on the NFL because so much depends on whether the players feel like playing hard or not. They tend to quit playing when the least amount of fatigue sets in. They've got their big contracts, most are already rich, and as long as they live another day they'll be okay. I know this might not be the rule, but it doesn't take much of it to make a team lose a game that they're suppose to win.
I'll take college games over the NFL any day of the week. The atmosphere and excitement is many times greater.
